英語の質問していいですか

いくつか質問があるんですが。

１．前置詞がある場合とない場合の微妙な違いがよくわかりません。例えば、
He started out working in the stockroom.
He started working in the stockroom.
です。私の話す英語はいつも下のほうなんですよね。どんな違いがあるんでしょうか。それで上の文のように入っていなくても文意の通じる句（上ならout）があると思うんですが、例があれば教えてください。

２．She had been born five and a half years before.

３．Brown shutters flanked six-over-six windows.

２と３は和訳を教えてください。

茶色の雨戸(Brown shutters)がその窓の側面にあった(flanked)ってことでは。雨戸だから外側だと思う…多分(^^;)

１．started outのほうは「当初stockroomで働きはじめた」というニュアンス（今は違う職場）。後者は「最近stockroomで働きはじめた」

overとかoutとか普通に活用できるようになるともっと微妙なニュアンスが表現ｄきるようになるんですね。
