I wasn't sure if I was on T-Mobile's international plan, so I went into T-Mobile's site and looked for a grizzly and found that I was on the following conditions. So I could use it in Japan last year.

Low flat-rate calling while abroad
$ 0.25/minute in 215+ countries and destinations

Data and texting while abroad
Unlimited text and up to 5GB of high-speed data in 11 countries, then unlimited data at up to 256Kbps in 215+ countries and destinations
25 cents per minute is fair, but I can't afford to spend too much time on the phone. I'll have to tell my wife for sure.

T-Mobile seems to use Softbank in Japan, but Softbank is a bit hard to reach in mountain towns in Shikoku.

If I can get into T-Mobile's site then, I will apply for the use of the phone in Japan on the Internet, or

if that is not possible, I will find a T-Mo store that will be open and go there.

How do you have internet access on your phone when you go back home ？ I'm planning to stay in Japan for about 2 months, but I'm thinking it's going to be a pretty big lost expense since I'm paying monthly in the US and it's going to cost even more. Well, the same goes for rent, so there's no end to it 😭

For those of you who go back to your hometown for 2-3 months every year, what do you do about the inconvenience of having only Wi-Fi in town while in Japan ？

By the way, I have only been back home for 1-2 weeks over the last 10 years and I've been using Wi-Fi for almost a month or so.
