I don't know what the Japanese who work in the election office usually do, but when the election is coming up, they need paid volunteers who can speak Japanese in some areas and are looking for them.
They have a hard time finding Japanese people because they don't participate very often.

I once took a paid volunteer training （ at the Veterans of Foreign Wars ） place.

Paid volunteers at the polling place would start setting up around 6 am
and clean up again after the polls close and either end up putting the ballot boxes and tools away
or return them with the ballot boxes and tools to the designated location depending on the availability of other volunteers for that day.
If it is late, it will take until about 11:00 PM.
I don't want to be tied up from 6am until around 11pm. I don't want to.
