You are very filial. It has been 50 years since I was in the U.S. and I have done nothing to take care of my parents. My mother is 95 years old, but she is still in good health and lives at home. We go back to Japan once a year to see if each other is still alive. ^^;

As for what to do as a pilgrim at each temple, the Buddha is very generous, and simply throwing money and joining hands is perfectly acceptable. I do all the chanting in the main hall and the Daishi Hall, which is all that a pilgrim should do. It takes at least 30 minutes per temple, starting with bowing at the temple gate and purifying oneself at the hand-watering place.
