My wife and I and our oldest son's family are with Kaiser, but when our oldest son's family went on a trip to Korea a few years ago for some reason, our oldest son had a herniated disc that was so bad he could not move in Seoul, although he had always wanted to do so.

I contacted Kaiser from Korea, but Kaiser would only pay for the first "emergency treatment", so we went to a large hospital for emergency treatment, and the whole family went via Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines, which was cheaper, but he was forced to pay over $2,500 one way. However, he had no choice but to fly back to LAX by Asiana Airlines, paying more than $2,500 for one way.

So, I heard that Kaiser only covers "first aid" or the first medical checkup, no matter how hard you try. Well, I think all insurance companies have similar policies, except for the most expensive plans. As you might guess, it is the same in Japan, but we have no way of reviewing the huge amount of medical claims from foreign hospitals.

I think the coverage for one or two weeks is not expensive.

Last year, during my stay in Japan, my stomach started to hurt so much that I had an endoscopy at a gastroenterologist and was charged 45,000 yen.
I had to pay the bill myself at that time, but after returning to the U.S., I sent the medical certificate and the bill to the insurance company and received the full amount back. （ The medical certificate and the claim form were acceptable in Japanese ）

I think you can apply for a plan that suits you because you can choose the options.

Sevencorners seems to offer travel insurance for less than half the price of AAA. Next time I go to Japan, I will buy it there. I dread the thought of getting hurt in Japan and flying back to LA in pain.
