U.S. Passport Renewal

My U.S. passport will expire next April, so I prepared my documents and sent them to the National Passport Processing Center to have passport photos made and pasted.

I made the passport photo using Passport Photo, a smartphone app. The cheapest way to make passport photos is to take a selfie with this free app and process the image as instructed to create a jpg file containing four 2"x2" photos and one 4"x6" print. Send this to Costco's online print order and it will be ready in 2 days.

The 4"x6" print costs 17 cents and I ordered 2 just in case, so 37 cents with tax. I went to the Costco store to pick up my order, but since I didn't have anything else to buy, I paid only 37 cents.

You can also create a passport renewal document by simply filling in the information on the screen at

and then print it out and sign it. Print it out, sign it, and then attach a 2"x2" photo to it with a Stapler. I sent it with my passport to an address in Irving TX in a 3 Day Priority Mail envelope (12-1/2" x 9-1/2") $ 7.35 that comes with USPS Tracking.

travel.state.gov above also says "use a mailing method that is Tracking/Trace-able" so USPS 3 Day Priority Mail is the cheapest method. If you choose email, the receipt will have a Tracking No. in the email and you can click on the Tracking No. from your computer screen to see where you are or where it has been delivered to.

Trusted Traveler Programs (Global Entry, TSA Pre ✓ ® , SENTRI, NEXUS, and FAST)

I had a horrible crowd at LAX when going to Japan I avoid the security checkpoints and go to the KTN line, which is easy ・ and quick with TSA PreCheck, but this number expires in 2021. When this topic came up before, I was told that Global Entry would work over a wider area, so I said I would go with Global Entry, even though it is $15 more this time.

After further research, we decided to keep the TSA PreCheck, which only allows entry and exit by air, and Global Entry, which allows border crossings by land and sea for only $15 more over 5 years. This means that you can drive across the border into Mexico or Canada, or even go overseas and return by luxury cruiser.

However, I am old and have little or no interest in international travel except by air. Also, while I can renew my TSA PreCheck online, I have to go to a federal office near LAX for an interview ・ and fingerprinting to apply for a new Global Entry. Thus, I have a year and a half to renew my TSA PreCheck, but I am going to stick with TSA PreCheck for now.

On a side note, TSA PreCheck is the same as Global Entry for U.S. lawful permanent residents. I had misunderstood until now.

I bought a mid-May LAX-NRT flight for $489 when Singapore Airlines was having a July 4th sale, but ANA is going to add one more LAX-HND flight starting next March, and I was wondering what the fare would be in mid-May next year, so I checked.

Then I heard that the fare is $719 if you make a reservation at this time. That is more than $100 less than I expected. Of course, it is not a sale price, so there is a fee as shown below, but you can change your reservation ・ and get a refund, and seat assignments are free. Delta's Haneda flight was $717, also on sale, which is very close to ANA's price. Also, paying with miles I got only 30,000mi + $ 61. Both companies felt this was low for May.

These low fares are only available now, but they will go up as the boarding date gets closer and sometimes double in less than 2 weeks.

I guess business class is a big deal and the ride seems comfortable. I checked the business class fares for the mid-May dates I mentioned in #1273, and they are $4,661. If you shift it a few days further, it's $5,161.

I'm a cheapskate, and when I saw this amount, I thought I'd better get used to sitting in the poor seats. I was a cheapskate when I saw this price, and I confirmed again that I would be fine with economy if I could fly to Japan safely even if I had to sit in the poor seats for 11 hours. Some people say that the fatigue upon arrival in Japan is totally different between economy class and business class, but I have found that if I add a day to my stay in Japan, stay at a hostel for $30 per night, and take two $20 Tylenol PM tablets containing 24 tablets at bedtime, I recover from both fatigue and jet lag quite well.

I was a poor man from the bottom of my heart, or rather, I was a poor man with double the money.
