GCs issued 1979-1989 are still valid without expiration date.　No need to renew.　More than a decade ago, a bill was decided to invalidate this as well, but it seems to have been forgotten without ever deciding when to implement it.

Sometimes when you enter the U.S., the officer will say, "This is not valid, you need to renew it," but they will let you enter because it is valid.　As you can see below, it is still valid.　If you find it more convenient to use the new digitalized GC, you can renew it.　Not being able to use the kiosk is inconvenient, but having to renew every 10 years is also inconvenient.

Older Green Cards or those without expiration dates
Green cards issued between 1979 and August 1989 do not have expiration dates and do not need to be renewed unless you wish to use Global Entry kiosks at international airports in the United States. you will have to get a replacement card. GE kiosks cannot read the old format Green cards.

If I renew online once every 10 years, is there any problem if I use the 10 year old photo as it is
for my green card photo?
When you leave Japan, if the airline counter staff compares your photo with the one taken 10 years ago,
they may not say it out loud, but they may think in their gut that the person at the counter looked cool 10 years ago
and the one taken 10 years ago looks very tired.

In my case: after e-filing on May 28, I received an appointment letter in the mail immediately.
Cost - $540
I go to the local immigration office on June 18 -
I need to bring
- appointment letter
- ID with photos
- old permanent residence card
- they take a new photo of me on the spot.
March 23 of the next year, I️ received my new card.
