This Veterans Day we want to take the time to thank and honor the incredible people who have served and continue to serve our country. Everyone is invited this Saturday for our Long Beach Veteran's Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Houghton Park. It will be a FREE, family-friendly event! We are proud to announce that the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) presented this year’s prestigious Most Business-Friendly City Award to the City of Long Beach at the Eddy Awards®. We stay committed to creating a strong, supportive, and inclusive environment for all businesses to thrive in Long Beach. Our work to help people experiencing homelessness continues. You can get involved too! Our Long Beach Health Department is seeking 300 volunteers to help conduct the 2024 Point in Time Count, its street count of people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, taking place Jan. 25, 2024. This Veteran's Day come to our 2023 Veterans Day Celebration happening this Saturday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Houghton Park. Read more Check Out Our Business Insights Tool to Support Long Beach Small Businesses The City of Long Beach continues to expand its innovative business resources with the launch of its Business Insights Tool, a new, free online resource for local businesses that makes big data accessible for small businesses, allowing them to benchmark performance, optimize marketing, and analyze competitors, suppliers and underserved markets. Learn more Long Beach Seeks Volunteers for 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services is seeking 300 community volunteers to help conduct the 2024 Point in Time Count, its street count of people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, which will take place on Jan. 25, 2024. Volunteer registration is now available online and will remain open until the available volunteer slots are filled. If more than 300 people register to volunteer for the Count, people will be added to a waitlist. Click here City of Long Beach Seeks Partnerships with Community Organizations to Serve Residents Experiencing Homelessness The City of Long Beach is seeking partnerships with community organizations and local companies that are interested in collaborating with the City in our homelessness emergency response and assist in serving residents experiencing homelessness. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Watch now The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a case of dengue in a resident who has not traveled outside of the U.S. This is the first case of dengue in Long Beach not related to travel and only the second in California, the first of which was identified earlier this month in Pasadena. The risk of local exposure remains low, and the Health Department is taking steps to prevent further spread of the virus that causes dengue. Click here The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services just confirmed a case of St. Louis Encephalitis (SLEV) spread to people by the bites of infected culex mosquitoes. This is the first documented human case of SLEV in Long Beach since 1984. The risk of local exposure remains low, and the Health Department is taking steps to prevent further spread of the virus that causes SLEV. Click here City of Long Beach Announces New Resource for Families and Caregivers Our Health Department has been awarded a grant to expand the Long Beach Resource Line to answer questions related to milestones and developments for children younger than five. The initiative is part of Help Me Grow LA, an effort of First 5 LA and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, to help connect people to support for children who may need early childhood development resources. Additionally, the online City of Long Beach Resource Directory, powered by Unite Us, will include critical resources through the digital map that will help residents connect to early childhood developmental and intervention resources. Learn more Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Winter Class Registration Now Open! Classes including art, music, fitness and sports will be offered from December 2023 through February 2024. The classes provide opportunities for exercise and recreation, social interaction, learning and relaxation for every age from preschool-aged children to adults. Register today! Click here Long Beach’s El Dorado Nature Center to Host California Native Plant Sale November 7-21 The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is offering their annual California Native Plant Sale now through Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023, at El Dorado Nature Center. The plant sale will feature hundreds of beautiful and beneficial native plants to enhance gardens, patios or balconies and increase habitat for wildlife. Plants will be available for purchase from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, while supplies last. Click here City Seeks Partner to Operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market in Long Beach The City of Long Beach is seeking a partner to implement and operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market (MHFM) in Long Beach. The goal of the MHFM is to increase access to affordable fresh produce in neighborhoods defined as having poor food access as well as increase opportunities for residents to be connected to other services and resources that address the social determinants of health and improve health outcomes. The City of Long Beach will be procuring and building out a vehicle designed to operate as a MHFM. Click here City Seeks Partner to Expand Legal Services within the Long Beach Justice Fund We are seeking to partner with one or more qualified organizations to provide free legal representation and outreach, through the Long Beach Justice Fund, to people who are low-income immigrants and who are at risk of deportation. The expansion of the Justice Fund will provide community connection services, such as outreach, legal service education, client advocacy, and additional forms of legal representation to safeguard residents from potentially facing deportation. Learn more City of Long Beach Announces Plans for Federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) Implementation, Climate Action Accelerator We recently announced upcoming contracting opportunities for technical assistance providers to support the City’s Climate Action Accelerator initiative, an effort to ensure that residents, local businesses and nonprofits are prepared to pursue funds available through the federal Inflation Reduction Act. Learn more Community Invited to Provide Feedback on LGBTQ+ Cultural District Visioning Process The Long Beach Community Development Department has created concepts for a vision and feasibility plan for the new LGBTQ+ Cultural District and the community is invited to identify and prioritize which improvements are most important by completing an online survey. The survey will be available in various languages including English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog through Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023. Learn more Participate in the Churro 5K to Help Long Beach Students! Join the City of Long Beach Latino Employee Organization (LEO) for its 3rd Annual Churro 5K on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Every year, LEO fundraises money for its legacy Scholarship Program. This special event assists LEO in maintaining its promise to help students reach their full potential, regardless of race, income, or background. 100% of the proceeds from the Churro 5K will go to LEO's scholarship fund and continue to help support scholars pursuing post-secondary education. Long Beach’s Daisy Lane Parade and Night of Holiday Entertainment Returns This December The City of Long Beach and the Office of Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga proudly present the 2023 Daisy Lane Parade, taking place on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, and night of holiday entertainment on Sunday, Dec. 10. The festive parade will begin at 5 p.m. on Daisy Avenue at West Burnett Street and travel south, down the eastside of Daisy Avenue to Pacific Coast Highway where it will make its way around the median and back up the westside of Daisy Avenue and conclude near West Hill Street and Maine Avenue around 7 p.m. Learn more Celebrate the New Year at The Queen Mary!
