Discover what our City has to offer!     SB 1383: California Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Reduction Law is a statewide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. It is meant to minimize contamination in our landfills by separating waste into 3 containers: Organics: Food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste Recycling: Plastic bottles/jugs/tubs, aluminum, metal cans, glass bottles/jars, paper, and cardboard Trash: If it doesn’t fit in either category, to the landfill it goes. This includes plastics bags and Styrofoam. Let’s reduce the emissions of climate pollutant by correctly sorting our organic and recyclable waste from regular trash. Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   WEEKLY COYOTE REPORTS AVAILABLE ON THE CITY'S WEBSITE Data collection and tracking coyote activity are critical components of an effective coyote management plan. The purpose of monitoring human-coyote interactions is to document where coyotes are frequently seen and to identify locations where increased potential for encounters may occur. Gathering specific data on incidents allows for targeting educational campaigns in a timely manner to specific areas where increased coyote activity is reported. By educating members of the community, residents can make informed decisions to safeguard their pets and family and avoid unwanted coyote interactions.  Residents and the community at-large play a critical role providing their feedback to the City’s Coyote program. PREVENT NUISANCE COYOTE BEHAVIOR IN YOUNG COYOTES Coyote pups born in spring are now approximately six months old. As coyote pups mature, they become independent and venture further from their home-range. At this time of year, young coyotes begin to leave their family pack. These juvenile coyotes are inexperienced when compared to older coyotes. Hazing fledgling coyotes is essential to keeping them wild, in the wild and afraid of people. How does hazing young coyotes prevent problem behavior? Deters development of bad habits. Family pack elders teach pups how to hunt and forage. If adult coyotes feel comfortable going through trash in someone’s backyard, it will teach pups to do the same. Reinforces fear of people. Hazing a skittish coyote creates even more unease around people. Reverse the notion that humans are quiet observers; there is no risk. Wild animal should perceive humans as an avoidable risk. And so to protect themselves, they should avoid humans as much as possible. It’s easier to train a canine than re-train learned behavior. The phrase ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is applicable to canines, especially the undomesticated coyote. Creates an uncomfortable environment near residential areas. If a young coyote encounters hazing in a park or backyard with people, it might think twice about stepping foot in the area again. Hazing works best when it’s a community-wide effort. Let your neighbors know if you see a coyote. Talk to neighbors about how to react during an encounter. Learn how to minimize coyote visits in your back yard.
