● People get married thinking that they will be happy with this person, and then divorce thinking that they will be happy if they separate from this person.

●Divorce is surprisingly easy when young, with no children and no property.　When they are middle-aged or older, they have children, property, debts, spousal support issues, custody issues, child support issues, and many other complications, but they still have the strength and energy to work.　And then there are the divorces of the elderly that come up.

●The children are already independent, they live alone, they have some assets, they have a pension, they can live a stable life even if they cannot afford luxury, they can live a peaceful life, and they think they can live peacefully.

● There are many reasons for this, but one reason is that people are living longer and they have begun to reevaluate their lives, thinking that they will have to live with this person for the next 30 years, and the stress that has built up over the years ・ has reached its limit and the brakes that had been working for the sake of the children have been removed. ● Elderly divorce is on the rise, with the number of divorces among those aged 50 and over doubling from 1990.　A national survey shows that there are 12 divorces for every 1,000 divorces for those aged 55 to 64, and 5 divorces for every 100 divorces for those aged 65 and older.　This has been accompanied by a boom in senior dating.　Statistically, more elderly divorcees are divorcing from second marriages than from first marriages.　Another reason is that couples are becoming more financially independent and less anxious about divorce.

In reality, however, few people enter retirement with enough money to live worry-free, and the chances of returning to the workforce are diminishing due to age, making divorce a major issue.　In addition, when a spouse becomes ill and requires nursing care, the stresses of the past are compounded by the need to care for the elderly, leading to divorce

● The practical response of people faced with these realities is to live separately and wait for the other person to die. This is a sad reality.

● However, it is also true that there are additional forces that try to deter divorce.　Children will try to prevent divorce.　They are afraid that their property will be dispersed.　This is a move unique to the United States.

●In this interview, we would like to invite Ms. Miyuki Nishimura, a divorce lawyer specializing in American divorce, to talk in detail about the issues involved in divorce.
