Keeping up with Kathryn

Oct. 4, 2024

Dear Friends,

October is National Women's Small Business Month (https://www.sba.gov/about-sba/organization/observances/national-womens-small-business-month) , and to celebrate, I honored three incredible Fifth District small business owners at our Board of Supervisors (https://bos.lacounty.gov/) meeting this week. My heartfelt congratulations to Viana from Posh Sweets (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558388579278) in Santa Clarita, Gloria from Monrovia Floral & Flower Delivery (https://www.monfloral.com/) in Monrovia, and Nikki from Octavia's Bookshelf (https://www.octaviasbookshelf.com/) in Pasadena! Each of these women have unique businesses, powerful life stories, and a shared commitment to their communities. Whether they’ve owned their business for decades, or just launched this year, each of them has made a meaningful impact. To hear our honorees' inspirational stories, click here (https://vimeo.com/1015935215/614add0de2?share=copy) to watch my presentation. As our honorees would tell you,
owning a business isn't easy, but it is a worthwhile labor of love. I encourage you to support their businesses and your own favorite local businesses (https://opportunity.lacounty.gov/) across the Fifth District!

Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger
Supervisor, Fifth District
Meet Allegra, an excitable and happy-go-lucky two-year-old pit bull, and Nugget, a gentle and sweet one-year-old Labrador Retriever mix. If you'd like to open your heart and home to a new pet, consider adopting one of them from the Palmdale Animal Care Center, which is open for drop-ins Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Desert Haven Enterprises (https://www.deserthaven.org/) in Lancaster provides incredible workforce development training for adults with developmental disabilities, giving them the confidence, skills, and support they need to thrive. I was proud to join Spectrum (https://www.spectrum.com/) on Thursday as they presented a check for $90,000 (https://www.facebook.com/supervisorbarger/videos/584072273951053) to this worthwhile cause, an especially timely celebration during Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Happy 100th birthday, Pasadena City College! Thank you for investing in students’ lives and paving the way to a brighter future for our community. I've been proud to work with the college many times over the years, including targeted efforts to support veterans and foster youth.

We cannot meaningfully address homelessness if we’re working in silos. On Monday, I met with city leaders in the San Gabriel Valley to discuss a path forward to better collaborate, to ensure we’re being good neighbors, and to make the most of our resources to provide people on our streets with housing, shelter, and supportive services.

It’s because of caring residents that all neighbors have access to their local Altadena Library (https://www.altadenalibrary.org/) to nurture their love of learning. It was a lovely evening last Saturday celebrating the Altadena Library Foundation and their supporters, including the Galloways, who have invested in the community for decades.

Keck Graduate Institute is leading the way in biotechnology and healthcare education. It was a pleasure to pay a visit to their campus in Claremont on Wednesday to meet with President Abousalem and Provost Prosser and see their impressive hands-on postgraduate programs in occupational therapy, pharmacy, engineering, medicine, genetics, health sciences, and more.

The monthly L.A. Current Affairs Forum offers an opportunity for public officials and business leaders to have an honest dialogue about the issues our communities face. I was proud to join them again for a discussion about a range of hot topics, including public safety (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/public-safety-and-justice/) , homelessness, mental health (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/homelessness-and-mental-health/) , governance reform (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-issues-statement-on-l-a-county-governance-reform/) , and transportation (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-issues-statement-on-metro-attack-in-pasadena/) .
