Quarterly Update for the Sun Valley Watershed Stakeholder Group

*Rory M. Shaw Wetlands*

The Rory M. Shaw Wetlands is an engineered, constructed wetlands park that will mitigate flood risk, reduce stormwater pollution, increase water conservation, recreational amenities, and wildlife habitat. The park will feature a 21-acre detention pond, a 10-acre wetland, and 15-acre recreational open space.

Progress on design plans and construction documents is ongoing. Phase 2 of the Rory Shaw project is dedicated to excavation and rough grading of the facility.

*Sun Valley Upper Storm Drain*

The Sun Valley Upper Storm Drain is a 4.75-mile long storm drain that will capture stormwater from the upper 929 acres of the watershed. This water will be conveyed to the Rory M. Shaw Wetlands, where it will be treated for improved water quality and then later infiltrated for improved water conservation.

The Sun Valley Upper Storm Drain Phase 1 Project began construction on July 2021. All storm drain lines for Stage 6 (along Penrose from Tujunga Avenue to San Fernando Road) are in place. Roadway work including subgrade preparation along Penrose St., followed by base material placement and base/cap AC paving was completed. Final striping, matching the original layout, will take place later this month which will fully open the area to regular traffic.
