VOLUME 13 | ISSUE 35 AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 TORRANCE CARES MAUI RELIEF Over the past couple of weeks, the island of Maui suffered a devastating wildfire. The community can join relief efforts by donating to various organizations. Any amount helps those in need. DONATE A MESSAGE FROM TORRANCE POLICE DEPARTMENT CHIEF JAY HART Public safety is our top priority. The Torrance Police Department strives to provide all community members with a safe and positive experience when visiting Torrance. We are united with all of our community partners and oppose any individuals who come to Torrance to disrupt or violate the law. As seen in the recent disturbance at Del Amo Fashion Center, an immediate and robust Police Response was utilized to make the scene safe and methodically implement control measures. As we head into the holiday season, there will be an increased police presence and patrol of Torrance Police Officers in vehicles and on foot at popular locations in the City like the Del Amo Fashion Center. In addition, calls for service will be supported by utilizing Drones as first responders when needed. We encourage the community to report suspicious and/or criminal behavior. If you see something, say something. Support community safety by staying informed and being heard. Be a part of the conversation and join me for a “CHAT” with the Chief. This is one of the many ways to stay engaged and learn about what the Torrance Police Department is doing to ensure the community’s safety. And be sure to sign up for TorranceAlerts to receive up-to-date information regarding the City of Torrance. TORRANCE NEIGHBORHOOD OUTDOOR WARNING SIREN TESTING Thursday, September 14 | 10 A.M. Prefer to use your mobile device? Download the myTorranceCA app, available on iTunes and Google Play Store. Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   Recent increases in fatal cat attacks have been reported in the City of Torrance. It is unclear if affected cats are domestic pets or feral, given that most cats found are missing identification tags or microchips. While cat licenses are optional, it is encouraged for identification and safety. For information about the City of Torrance pet licensing process, please visit our website. Teaching Kids Coyote Safety Most kids love animals. There is, however, a difference between domesticated animals, like a child’s beloved dog, and wild canines, like an urban coyote. Animals, including pets, are unpredictable and can unknowingly injure a child. Parents concerned about wildlife safety can teach children good decision-making skills when kids encounter wildlife. Teach children to maintain cautious, respectful distance whenever they might observe wildlife. Tips to keep kids safe during a coyote encounter: Never go near or feed animals you don’t know. What looks like a lost puppy, might be a coyote pup. Kids, and sometimes adults, cannot tell the difference from afar. Stop moving. Don’t run. Canines instinctively chase after anything that runs even if it means no harm. Make yourself big and loud. Yell in a mean, loud voice. Use your hands, a sweater or open your jacket to make yourself look bigger. Back away slowly. Move toward a building or a house for safety. Tell an adult. As soon as you can, tell an adult you know what you saw so they can report it to the City. The adult can better guide you and other kids in the area what to do next. Teaching kid’s safety around animals, especially those they don’t know, is an important skill. Please report coyote activity to one of Torrance’s reporting channels. Sightings or coyote encounters with people or pets: Telephone: 24-Hour Coyote Hotline (310) 618-3898 · Web: https://torrancecoyote.customerportal.help/en · App: MyTorranceCA Threat to human safety: Telephone: Call 9-1-1 immediately.
