City of Long Beach News: 🇺🇸 Presidents' Day Schedule, Storm Recovery & Job Opportunities!

This Monday, February 19, is Presidents' Day and several City of Long Beach facilities will be closed and some services may be impacted. We have our complete holiday schedule below with all the important information regarding street sweeping, refuse/recycling, parking citations and more. Earlier this month we experienced an unprecedented amount of rain in Long Beach and in Los Angeles County. Los Angeles County is in the process of assessing damage related to the storms to infrastructure and private properties countywide, as well as supporting residents with their individual recovery efforts. More information is available in this issue. Join us in congratulating our inaugural cohort of 48 fellows of our Long Beach Public Service Corps. This fellowship program will provide local college students and recent graduates with hands-on experience working in City government and exploring careers in public service. Click here City of Long Beach Recaps Storm Preparedness and Response Efforts After Winter Storm Series, Cleanup Efforts Underway Following a series of winter storms that recently impacted Long Beach and much of California, we wanted to share some of our storm preparedness, response and mitigation efforts conducted. Since Feb. 1, Long Beach experienced nearly 10 inches of rain, more than triple the historic average rainfall for the entire month of February. While the high volume of rain over a short period of time led to localized flooding in some areas of Long Beach, aftereffects were greatly minimized due to City and community preparedness. Read more Residents Encouraged to Report Damages to Homes and Businesses Caused by Recent Storms Los Angeles County is in the process of assessing damage to infrastructure and private properties countywide, as well as supporting residents with their individual recovery efforts. To help determine the impacts of the storms, Los Angeles County has established a dedicated Winter Storm Recovery webpage and survey, available at recovery.lacounty.gov, to gather basic damage information from residents and businesses. Click here City of Long Beach Welcomes Inaugural Class of the Long Beach Public Service Corp The City of Long Beach and Mayor Rex Richardson hosted the official kick-off of the Long Beach Public Service Corps, an innovative paid fellowship program that will provide local college students and recent graduates with hands-on experience working in City government and exploring careers in public service. Learn more Long Beach Public Library Presents “Our History, Our Future,” a Celebration of Black History and Culture Our Long Beach Public Library is proud to announce the launch of "Our History, Our Future," a month-long celebration dedicated to honoring and showcasing the richness of Black history and culture. These vibrant events will feature a series of thought-provoking and inspiring activities that highlight Black love, self-identity, self-care, art and joy within the Black community. Click here City of Long Beach Lifts Beach Closure Order City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, has lifted the closure order on all beaches, including coastal beaches and bays, which includes lagoons, after consecutive lab results demonstrated the water to be within State water quality standards. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more Celebrating the Conflict: Mildred's Story Mildred Caudillo, 94, loves to move. She is a deeply caring and creative soul with a profound passion for dance. When she was 78, Mildred experienced homelessness for 14 months after a sudden house fire. She worked closely with our Long Beach Department of Health & Human Services Homeless Services Bureau to attain permanent housing. And today she is leading tango classes at Wardlow Park. Her story is one of strength, resolve and celebrating the conflict. Read more City Holds Demolition Ceremony for the Former North Neighborhood Library The City of Long Beach with its nonprofit affiliate, The Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC) and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) hosted a ceremonial demolition of the former North Neighborhood Library, which will make way for construction of new affordable townhome community. The site will be developed into housing that will provide the opportunity for low-income families to purchase their first home. Click here Los Angeles County Now Distributing Vote by Mail Ballots to Long Beach Registered Voters, Drop Boxes Now Available The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk began distributing Vote by Mail ballots for the March 5, 2024, Primary Nominating Election. All registered voters in Los Angeles County, which includes Long Beach, will be mailed a Vote by Mail ballot. Ballots may be returned by mail (no postage required), in person at any Vote Center in Los Angeles County, or at any Vote by Mail Ballot Drop Box. Long Beach voters have 24-hour access to drop boxes at more than 400 participating locations across Los Angeles County, including 17 drop box locations throughout Long Beach. The 17 Long Beach locations include: Bixby Park Community Center (130 Cherry Ave.) Bret Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.) Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.) Dana Neighborhood Library (3680 Atlantic Ave.) El Dorado Park West Community Center (2800 N. Studebaker Rd.) Freeman Community Center (1205 Freeman Ave.) Heartwell Park Community Center (5801 Parkcrest St.) Houghton Park Community Center (6301 Myrtle Ave.) Long Beach City Hall (411 W. Anaheim St.) Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) Ramona Park (3301 E. 65th St.) Scherer Park (4600 Long Beach Blvd.) Stearns Champions Park (4520 E. 23rd St.) Veterans Park (101 E. 28th St.) Vote by Mail Ballot Drop Boxes are now open and will remain open until 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, March 5. Click here Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach is announcing an expansion of the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer a Variety of Classes for Residents This Spring Registration for a variety of new and existing recreation classes offered our Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is now open! More than 700 activities in art, music, nature, fitness, special interest subjects, adult sports leagues and aquatics will begin in March and continue through May 2024. Click here Melanie Wagner Appointed Manager of Long Beach Animal Care Services Dr. Melanie Wagner has been appointed Bureau Manager for Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS), under the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM). She brings to the role extensive experience and knowledge about animal care and the LBACS Compassion Saves model and has over 20 years of professional experience. Dr. Wagner began her role as Bureau Manager on Jan. 31, 2024. Read more City of Long Beach to Host Community Meeting on Studebaker Road Improvements We are hosting an in-person community meeting to provide an overview of the Studebaker Road Complete Streets Project. The meeting will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the El Dorado Park West Community Center (2800 Studebaker Rd.). The approximate $50 million project will implement major street improvements along the approximate 5-mile corridor between 2nd Street and Carson Street. Improvements include multi-modal enhancements such as upgraded traffic signals, fiber optic communication, pavement resurfacing and repair, ADA compliant paths of travel, protected intersection treatments, curb-protected bikeways, street beautification and new landscaping elements. Click here Long Beach Airport Seeks Development Proposals for 17-Acre Wardlow Parcel In an effort to attract new investment and jobs at Long Beach Airport (LGB), the City of Long Beach has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the aeronautical development of 17 acres at LGB. The available land, known as the Wardlow Parcel, is located on the west side of the airfield. Click here City of Long Beach to Host Space Beach Job Fair for Space and Aerospace Talent Affected by Recent Layoffs at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory The City of Long Beach Economic Development Department and its Workforce Development Bureau, operating as Pacific Gateway Workforce Innovation Network, announced in conjunction with Mayor Rex Richardson, the Space Beach Job Fair, a special hiring event open to space and aerospace professionals who have been displaced by the recent layoffs at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and any Long Beach residents who have matching skill sets. The Space Beach Job Fair will take place on Friday, February 23rd, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the City of Long Beach’s WorkPlace facility (4811 Airport Plaza Drive, Long Beach, CA 90815).
