The Presidential Primary Election is on Tuesday, March 5. There are also very important local and state elections happening and your vote will matter. The Los Angeles County Registrar opened vote centers throughout Los Angeles County. Voters who receive a Vote by Mail ballot can vote in-person at any Vote Center or by mail. Click here Alison King Appointed Director of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services City Manager Tom Modica announced the appointment of Alison King as the Director for the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department), effective immediately. Ms. King brings to the position over five years of experience as a public health administrator and over 20 years of human services experience. Ms. King has served as Acting Director for the Health Department since October 2023. Read more Long Beach Health Department Launches Brush, Book, Bed to Promote Healthy Dental Habits for Children The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services launched the Brush, Book, Bed campaign, which encourages children to build routines that establish good dental health habits, combining oral health, literacy and an appropriate bedtime. Organizations interested in participating in the Brush, Book, Bed campaign can visit longbeach.gov/oralhealth to learn more and download digital and print assets. Click here The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services launched a new program that provides resources and supplies to Long Beach residents so that those who use drugs can minimize their risk of possible serious or deadly outcomes. This is part of a strategy called harm reduction—a set of practical strategies and ideas that aim to reduce the negative consequences associated with substance use. Learn more City of Long Beach Continues Offering Charitable Giving Opportunities to Support People Experiencing Homelessness Our Department of Health and Human Services will host a donation drive thru on Saturday, March, to collect essential items to distribute to people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. The drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Health Department’s Main Facilities Center (2525 Grand Ave.). Read more City of Long Beach Named Finalist in International Data Corporation Government Insights’ 7th Annual Smart Cities North America Awards The City of Long Beach has been selected as a finalist in the International Data Corporation (IDC) Government Insights’ seventh annual Smart Cities North America Awards (SCNAA) for its trailblazing progress in creating and sustaining innovative technology projects in the Civic Engagement category for its Long Beach Collaboratory (LB Co-Lab) program. The LB Co-Lab is a new model for community-driven smart cities that ensures the City invests in technology enhancements based on community-identified needs while teaching community members how to navigate the tech world. Long Beach is one of 43 jurisdictions across the country to be selected as a finalist. As a next step in the selection process, IDC has launched a public voting period to select the winners for each of the 14 categories. Local residents and community members are invited to vote for the City of Long Beach, available online now through 5 p.m. eastern time on Friday, March 8. Winners will be announced March 27 and honored at Smart Cities Connect Conference this May. Vote here! Long Beach Hosting ‘Data Walks’ to Increase Transparency and Public Awareness for City’s Data Collection Practices In an ongoing effort to enhance data privacy, digital rights and transparency, the City of Long Beach Department of Technology and Innovation, in partnership with California State University, Long Beach, is launching a series of mobile community workshops, called 'Data Walks,' for residents to learn about the technologies the City deploys and how it uses the data it collects. Groups of 15 to 25 participants will walk and engage with City technology, interact with City staff and CSULB researchers, and review the enhanced platform. Residents can request language interpretation services for the walks in the registration form. Participants will receive a $25 Target gift card in exchange for this 2-hour commitment! Register here! City Encourages Long Beach Residents Enrolled in the U.S. Affordable Connectivity Program to Review Internet Bill as Program Funding Nears Completion One of the City's critical strategies in bridging the digital divide is connecting residents with vital resources and programs, like the U.S. Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which since 2021 has appropriated $14.2 billion to provide qualifying low-income households across the nation with a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service, among other discounts. Program funding is expected to end this spring and, without supplemental funding from the federal government, nearly 50,000 Long Beach households will soon lose their discount. To inform and prepare impacted residents of the potential changes to their internet plans, the City’s Technology and Innovation Department is encouraging enrolled households to take the steps outlined below. They undergo technology deployment and training to design solutions that cater to our diverse communities. Read more City of Long Beach Launches Sidewalk to Success Program to Support Business Development The City of Long Beach, through the Long Beach Recovery Act, is funding a sidewalk vending support program, “Sidewalk to Success,” to help ease the financial burden for small businesses in the first year of the City’s recently approved Sidewalk Vending Ordinance currently in effect. Read more Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach has expanded the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here The Long Beach Police Department is Hosting a Free Catalytic Converter Etching Event for Residents The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) has partnered with the City of Long Beach's Fleet Services Bureau to host the"Etch and Catch- A Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Event." This is a free event for Long Beach residents to have their vehicle's license plate number etched onto the catalytic converter of their vehicle. This process can assist LBPD investigations if your catalytic converter is stolen and may also discourage criminals from stealing it. We recently celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated Silverado Park Skate Park. The park was upgraded with longer-lasting concrete elements, alongside a new grind rail and artwork created by local artist Van Eggers. The project was spearheaded by Action Sports Kids Foundation, a Long Beach-based nonprofit foundation that help with the design and raised $160,000 in private funds for the construction of this project. Click here Safety and Prevention Reminders Regarding Coyotes Recent coyote activity around Long Beach and surrounding areas gives reason for reminding residents of important safeguards to compassionately co-exist with coyotes and protect yourself and your pets. Keep pets, especially cats and small dogs, inside. Keep pet food indoors and, if feeding pets outdoors, supervise feedings and remove food bowls within an hour. Stay close to pets when they are outside and keep them on a leash, especially between dusk and dawn. Harvest ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground. Coyotes can climb trees to eat fruit. Bag food waste and make sure trash containers are securely closed. Use “hazing” techniques to shoo away coyotes, such as: Standing tall, yelling and waving arms Using a whistle, air horn, bell or other noisemaking device Banging pots or pans together Stomping your feet Flashing bright lights at the coyote Spraying water from a hose toward the coyote Spraying pepper spray at a coyote, if absolutely needed for protection Throwing tennis balls or sticks toward the coyote with the intent of scaring it off and not harming it Click here City of Long Beach to Host Community Meeting on Studebaker Road Improvements We are hosting an in-person community meeting to provide an overview of the Studebaker Road Complete Streets Project. The meeting will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the El Dorado Park West Community Center (2800 Studebaker Rd.). The approximate $50 million project will implement major street improvements along the approximate 5-mile corridor between 2nd Street and Carson Street. Improvements include multi-modal enhancements such as upgraded traffic signals, fiber optic communication, pavement resurfacing and repair, ADA compliant paths of travel, protected intersection treatments, curb-protected bikeways, street beautification and new landscaping elements.
