Here's The Latest

Update on the LA Wildfires

As catastrophic wildfires continue to devastate the Los Angeles area, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all those affected. We want to thank our first responders – firefighters, police officers, emergency response staff and medical professionals just to name a few. Individuals both here at home and far beyond have stepped up in a time of crisis and laid themselves on the line to help people in need. Their sacrifice represents the best of us.

The City encourages all residents to take proactive steps to prepare for emergencies. This includes developing a family emergency plan, assembling emergency supplies, and staying informed about potential hazards and emergency procedures. Further information on emergency preparedness and helpful guides can be found on the City's website. [ https://www.hermosabeach.gov/beready?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

In collaboration with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the City is actively planning to revitalize the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The next round of CERT training sessions are scheduled for June 2025. Stay tuned for more information.

LA Wildfire: City's Service Adjustments

In response to recent local fires that have caused an influx of ash and dust, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department temporarily suspended the use of leaf blowers. Additionally, the City coordinated with Athens Services to temporarily halt street sweeping through Tuesday, January 21st. During this period, there will be no street sweeping parking enforcement in posted zones. The community will be notified when these restrictions are lifted.

Greenbelt Pedestrian Trial, ADA and Striping Improvements (CIP 502/604/194) Updates

A partial grant reimbursement was received and Phase 1 of construction, spanning from 8th St to 11th St, is complete. Phase I includes the opening of an accessible trail, the installation of new fitness equipment, and the addition of new plantings and trees. Additionally, irrigation upgrades were installed enhancing the overall site infrastructure and landscaping. Next phase of construction will span from 11th Street to Pier Ave, which will include concrete work and striping*. *

Planning Commission Vacancy

The City Clerk’s Office is now accepting applications to become a Planning Commission member. One position is available, with a term set to expire on June 30, 2028. Applicants must be registered to vote in Hermosa Beach to be eligible.

2025 Homeless Count - Postponed

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) announced they will postpone the 2025 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count for at least 30 days. This decision was made in response to the ongoing wildfire crisis impacting Los Angeles County. For more information and updates please visit LAHSA’s website [ https://count.lahsa.org/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ].

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20, 2025, City Hall and the Community Center will reopen for in-person services on Tuesday, January 21st. Trash collection will proceed as scheduled. However, street sweeping and parking enforcement along Pacific Coast Highway will be suspended on Monday, January 20, while all other parking regulations will remain in effect. Construction work will not be allowed on Monday, January 20th.

As always, the Hermosa Beach Police Department and Public Works Departments will remain available over the holiday. You may contact the City with any issues by calling the non-emergency Police Department phone line at (310) 524-2750.

Clark Building Renovations (CIP 689) Update

This construction project is currently 46% complete, with several key tasks finished including the installation of the SCE utility underground trench and underground plumbing, as well as the construction of infill walls. Rough electrical work was completed, along with furring out wall framing in the ballroom. Additionally, site drainage systems were installed and ADA-compliant ramps and hardscaping on the north side and rear of the site are also finished. Ongoing work includes HVAC installation, above-ground plumbing, hardscaping in front of the building, structural steel retrofits, and switchgear installation.
