City of Long Beach News: Mayor Rex Richardson Presents on Economic Development in Long Beach, First Family Granted Homebuyers Assistance Grant & More

Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson hosted the inaugural Grow Long Beach presentation, formerly known as “Building a Better Long Beach,” where he shared insights on future economic development opportunities across emerging business sectors and industries that are instrumental to Long Beach’s future. We have all the details in this issue. We also have the bitter-sweet news of two instrumental employees of the City of Long Beach that recently announced that they will be leaving their current positions. Assistant City Manager Linda F. Tatum announced she will be retiring and Health and Human Services Department Director Kelly Colopy will also be leaving the City of Long Beach after being appointed Human Services Director for Salt Lake County, Utah. We want to thank both of them for their amazing work and contribution to Long Beach and wish them the best in their future endeavors. The City's homelessness emergency response efforts continue. We just increased our homeless service outreach with deployment of a second Mobile Access Center and additional service locations. Long Beach Showcases Key Growth Opportunities in City’s Emerging Business Sectors at Inaugural Grow Long Beach Presentation Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson hosted the inaugural Grow Long Beach presentation, formerly known as “Building a Better Long Beach,” where he shared insights on future economic development opportunities across emerging business sectors and industries that are instrumental to Long Beach’s future. This year’s presentation, which took place at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Honda Pacific Vision Theater, drew hundreds of regional and national leaders from commercial and private investors, entrepreneurs, labor organizations and community stakeholders. Learn more Assistant City Manager Linda F. Tatum Announces Retirement from City of Long Beach The City of Long Beach recently announced the upcoming retirement of Assistant City Manager Linda F. Tatum. She has served as Assistant City Manager since June 2020 and previously served as Director of the City’s Development Services Department. Ms. Tatum’s career in the planning field was spent mostly in the public sector, serving in the Cities of Inglewood, Culver City and Santa Ana before joining the City of Long Beach in 2015. Read more City of Long Beach Announces Departure of Health and Human Services Department Director Kelly Colopy The City of Long Beach recently announced the upcoming departure of Kelly Colopy, Director of the Department of Health and Human Services. Ms. Colopy, who has served as the Health Department Director since 2013, has been appointed Director for the Department of Human Services for Salt Lake County, Utah. Read more Long Beach Increases Homeless Service Outreach with Deployment of Second Mobile Access Center and Additional Service Locations The City of Long Beach launched its second Mobile Access Center (MAC). The MAC significantly lowers barriers to providing case management services and other resources for people experiencing homelessness, as it allows the City’s Homeless Services Bureau outreach staff to conduct meaningful engagement and relationship building and start the intake process right on the street. The deployment of the second MAC will double the number service areas throughout Long Beach, from eight to 16, available weekday mornings and afternoons during select times. Click here City of Long Beach Seeks to Mass Distribute Water to People Experiencing Homelessness, Donating Water to Local Community Based Organizations to Further Efforts In an ongoing effort to increase access to clean water and other essentials for people experiencing homelessness, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services’ Homeless Services Bureau is offering cases of water to local community-based organizations and advocates supporting people experiencing homelessness. Community organizations interested in receiving cases of water are encouraged to submit a water donation request form. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partnerships with Community Organizations to Serve Residents Experiencing Homelessness The City of Long Beach is seeking partnerships with community organizations and local companies that are interested in collaborating with the City in our homelessness emergency response and assist in serving residents experiencing homelessness. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. The first family to be granted the City's new First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program. Read how the couple and their three children – along with an eager new puppy – are living their dream of owning a home. Facilitated by our Development Services Department and funded by the Long Beach Recovery Act, the grant Program provides up to $20,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance to help low and moderate-income households – traditionally underrepresented in homeownership – with purchasing their first home. Read more Long Beach-Based Nonprofit Selected to Establish Community Land Trust At its Sept. 12, 2023, meeting, the Long Beach City Council awarded a contract to Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, a fiscal sponsor for Long Beach Residents Empowered (LiBRE), to establish and operate a Community Land Trust (CLT). A CLT is a nonprofit, community-based organization that raises funds, acquires and develops real estate with the goal of providing permanently affordable housing opportunities for residents. Learn more The City of Long Beach is seeking to partner with a community organization that can establish and facilitate an ongoing Latinx Health Collaborative. This opportunity will provide one-time seed funding to lead and sustain a collaborative space for Latinx-owned and -serving organizations to coordinate health equity efforts and direct services informed by the City’s Mi Vida Cuenta COVID-19 Latinx Health Initiative Report and Workplan (Mi Vida Cuenta). Learn more Long Beach Health Department Now Administering COVID-19 Vaccine to Uninsured and Underinsured Only Effective immediately, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services will begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine only to people who are un- or underinsured. While vaccine is available to most U.S. adults through private health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid plans, there are still 25 to 30 million adults without health insurance and additional adults whose insurance does not cover all COVID-19 vaccine costs. The City is adjusting its vaccine operations to align with the CDC's Bridge Access Program. Click here Long Beach Reduces Speed Limits on 92 Miles of City Streets The City of Long Beach recently launched a phased implementation of reducing speed limits on 92 miles of city streets as part of the citywide effort to improve roadway safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers. Of these streets, 50 segments will receive new speed limits of 20-mph or lower; the remaining streets, including 7th Street and other major corridors, will receive a 5-mph speed limit reduction. This action represents important progress toward the City’s Vision Zero goals, as outlined in the Safe Streets Long Beach Action Plan. Learn more Long Beach Seeks Volunteers for 16th Annual Bike and Pedestrian Count The City of Long Beach is looking for volunteers to assist with the 16th Annual Bike and Pedestrian Count. Every October, volunteers and City employees work together to manually count the number of bicyclists, pedestrians and electric scooter riders across dozens of key intersections in Long Beach – and the more volunteers who sign up, the more locations the city can observe during the count. Those interested in volunteering can sign up online now through Oct. 18, 2023. Volunteers must be available to participate in the count at one or more of the following times: 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023 Noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023 Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partner for Electric Bike Lending Library Program The City of Long Beach announced an Invitation to Bid to provide bikes and equipment for the City’s upcoming Electric Bike (E-Bike) Lending Library program. By enabling Long Beach residents to borrow e-bikes for an extended period of time, the E-Bike Lending Library program will expand familiarity with e-bike technology, increase e-bike ridership within the city and encourage an active, zero-emission mode of travel. Learn more City of Long Beach Celebrates National Digital Inclusion Week 2023 The National Digital Inclusion Alliance has declared Oct. 2 through 6, 2023, as National Digital Inclusion Week (DIW), an annual week of awareness, recognition and celebration where digital inclusion advocates across the country promote their digital equity and inclusion efforts. To celebrate DIW, the City of Long Beach will contribute to this year's "Building Connected Communities" theme by offering resources and information on its social media channels promoting digital equity and inclusion in Long Beach. Learn more Click here City Launches Innovative Business Insights Tool to Support Long Beach Small Businesses The City of Long Beach continues to expand its innovative business resources with the launch of its Business Insights Tool, a new, free online resource for local businesses that makes big data accessible for small businesses, allowing them to benchmark performance, optimize marketing, and analyze competitors, suppliers and underserved markets. To promote the new resource and help familiarize businesses with the platform, the City invites local small business owners, entrepreneurs and community members to participate in the Business Insights Tool workshop, taking place Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023.
