Stay informed Click here to view in your browser. Welcome to our City Newsletter! Greetings! This month Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson delivered the 2024 State of the City. Our Mayor highlighted some of the City's recent achievements and made note of some exciting things to come. He also started something new this year - the “Youth State of the City” highlighting Long Beach youth. The Youth State of the City featured remarks by youth leaders overviewing the City's inaugural Youth Advocacy Day, Youth Participatory Budgeting, the Annual Youth Festival, the Youth Advisory Council, and other youth-centered projects for the upcoming year. The City of Long Beach Civic Chambers will temporarily close to the public for scheduled audio/visual equipment upgrades and testing through Feb. 13, however during that time, members of the public may still participate in meetings for City Council, Commissions and Committees in person at alternative locations or via the City’s OneMeeting portal. The City's homelessness emergency response efforts continue. In our homelessness livestream where we provide regular updates on resources and services for people experiencing homelessness, Long Beach Mayor chatted with Health and Human Services Department Data Specialist, Dalton Dorr, to share with the public the details of our upcoming Homeless Point in Time Count. Watch here City of Long Beach Civic Chamber to Temporarily Close for Scheduled Construction Through February 13 The City of Long Beach Civic Chambers will temporarily close to the public for scheduled audio/visual equipment upgrades and testing. The project will add additional speakers and broadcast lighting in the Civic Chambers to improve the audio experience inside the Chambers for both in person and hybrid meetings and improve overall visibility. The Chambers will remain closed through Feb. 13, however during that time, members of the public may still participate in meetings for City Council, Commissions and Committees in person at alternative locations or via the City’s OneMeeting portal. Learn more City of Long Beach Invites Public to Share Their Priorities for the 2025 City Budget at Upcoming Community Meetings The City of Long Beach invites the community to participate in the City’s fiscal year 2025 budget development process by sharing their service priorities at one of the upcoming community budget meetings or by completing the Long Beach Budget Priority Survey. Learn more Watch Our Latest Livestream with Long Beach Mayor on the Upcoming Homeless Point in Time Count Mayor Rex Richardson sat down with our Health and Human Services Department Data Specialist, Dalton Dorr to chat about our 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count, a street count of people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. Our Department of Health and Human Services, along with 300 community volunteers, help conduct this Point in Time Count every year, which will take place on Thursday, Jan. 25 this year. Volunteer registration is currently full, but you may still register to be added to the waitlist. You will be notified if volunteers cancel leading up to the Count. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Read more The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services is investigating gastrointestinal illnesses, likely caused by norovirus, linked to consumption of raw oysters from certain areas of Mexico. At this time, the City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, is warning consumers not to eat raw oysters from certain areas of Mexico. For the latest oyster warnings, including area-specific information in Mexico, people can go to the Alerts, Advisories and Safety Information page of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website. These oysters have been sold at local restaurants, including those in Long Beach and other retail outlets in Southern California. Residents who think they have become sick after eating raw oysters are encouraged to file a report. People also may call 562.570.7907 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays to report illness or to get more information. Click here City of Long Beach Launches Virtual Service for General Building Project Information Our City of Long Beach Community Development Department launched a new virtual meeting service for the public to get general answers to building code questions for proposed projects. The service features real-time, one-on-one video sessions with Permit Center staff. To access the free service, customers will first need to schedule an appointment online. Click here Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach is announcing an expansion of the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here City Seeks Partner to Operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market in Long Beach The City of Long Beach is seeking a partner to implement and operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market in Long Beach. The City launched a Request for Proposals. Qualified organizations are encouraged to submit proposals through the City’s vendor portal, Long Beach Buys, by 11 a.m., on Feb. 8, 2024. The goal of the Mobile Healthy Food Market is to increase access to affordable fresh produce in neighborhoods defined as having poor food access as well as increase opportunities for residents to be connected to other services and resources that address the social determinants of health and improve health outcomes. Click here We launched a community survey for our Public Mural Program, an entity of the City of Long Beach's Creative Grants Program that is funded by the Long Beach Recovery Act and administered by the Arts Council of Long Beach (ArtsLB). Now through Feb. 2, 2024, members of the community are invited to submit a community survey, available in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog, to provide their input on the Public Mural Program, including potential locations and themes such as cultural, health and wellness, entertainment, and Long Beach landmarks and history, so that the murals can reflect the local community. Additional information regarding the survey can be found on the ArtsLB website. Click here Long Beach Pledge Guaranteed Income Pilot Program to Expand with Second Cohort The City of Long Beach has launched the application period for the expansion of the Long Beach Pledge, the City’s guaranteed income pilot program. The program will provide $500 a month for 12 months to 200 additionally funded households, utilizing $1.2 million in funding to support the City’s upstream homeless prevention efforts. The application is open for eligible residents at longbeachpledge.org now through Jan. 24 at 11:59 p.m. The online application for the second cohort is now live and is available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog. Applicants without computer or smartphone access may visit a public computer lab at any open Long Beach Public Library location. Click here City of Long Beach to Host Virtual Community Meeting on Alamitos Bay Water Quality Enhancement Project The City of Long Beach is hosting a virtual community meeting to provide recent updates on the Alamitos Bay Water Quality Enhancement Project. The meeting will be held via Zoom on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. The Alamitos Bay Water Quality Enhancement Project aims to protect water quality in Alamitos Bay by maintaining existing water circulation with new fish-friendly pumps that are separate from power plant cooling operations. This Saturday, January 20, 2024 our PRM Department will be hosting a job fair from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Doris Topsy Elvord Center at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave). Participants can learn about current and upcoming employment opportunities. Bring your resume, job interviews will be conducted onsite. Click here History Talk: Long Beach Airport’s 100th Anniversary Join us at the Billie Jean King Main Library on January 25, at 6 p.m. for a free presentation on our recent report, "Long Beach Airport and Southern California: A Brief New Aviation and Aeronautics History (1900s-1980s)." Join authors Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson and Dr. Philip S. Hart as they unveil unique insights of their findings. The report highlights significant milestones in Long Beach’s rich aviation history, including the establishment of our municipal airport, and reveals some of the lesser-known stories about women and about Black, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous and other persons of color who contributed greatly to the field of aviation in Southern California. The venue for this event is in Downtown Long Beach at our Billie Jean King Main Library. Click here Long Beach Transit’s Upcoming Service Change Long Beach Transit has three annual service changes in February, June and August to improve the efficiency and on-time reliability of bus schedules. The February service change is planned to take effect on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, and will include service changes for routes including the 121, 131, 41, 45, Passport and other routes.
