In this issue we have several family-friendly events to share with you. Don't miss out on our Celebration of the Young Child, Long Beach Touch-A-Truck, the City Nature Challenge and more all happening this weekend. This Earth Month we continue to demonstrate our commitment to the environment and sustainability with two large solar canopy installations recently installed and now fully operational on top of the parking structures at Long Beach Airport. We are also committed to creating more affordable housing in Long Beach. A new affordable and supportive housing development located in the Cambodia Town community was recently unveiled featuring 87 affordable rental units for low- and extremely low-income households . City Celebrates Ribbon Cutting of New Affordable and Supportive Housing Development The City of Long Beach recently celebrated the ceremonial ribbon cutting for a new affordable and supportive housing development located in the Cambodia Town community, in partnership with its nonprofit affiliate, The Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC), the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach (HACLB), BRIDGE Housing and TCC Family Health. The affordable housing development features 87 affordable rental units for low- and extremely low-income households earning 30% to 60% of area median income, 20 units reserved for older adults formerly experiencing homelessness, and one manager’s unit. The housing community consists of a range of one- to three-bedroom apartments, several resident amenities, an expansive roof deck and commercial offices. Click here New Solar Canopies Shine Among Sustainability Efforts at Long Beach Airport Underscoring the City of Long Beach’s commitment to environmental stewardship, two large solar canopy installations were recently installed and are now fully operational on top of the parking structures at Long Beach Airport, where City officials gathered on Earth Day to celebrate the completion of the sustainable project. Click here Long Beach Airport Sets New Passenger Traffic Record Long Beach Airport (LGB) has reached a new milestone, setting an all-time monthly record for the most passengers to board flights from LGB during its 100-year history. A total of 182,382 passengers departed from LGB in March 2024, surpassing the previous record of 178,836 enplanements set in July 2018. Measuring enplaned passengers is the industry standard because the majority of airport revenues are generated directly or indirectly from enplaned passengers. Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Celebrate Older American’s Month During May During the month of May, adults ages 50+ can enjoy a wide range of events and activities taking place throughout Long Beach, including art workshops, basketball and swimming competitions, field trips, enrichment activities, dinner and dance, job fairs, and a talent show. Pre-registration is required for the following activities, as space is limited Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer Summer Day Camps for Youth, June 17 through August 23 Our Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will offer Summer Aquatics and Park Day Camps from June 17 through August 23, 2024. Registration is open now online at LBParks.org. Youth ages 5 to 12 will enjoy games, crafts, physical fitness, enrichment activities and more. Summer Park Camps will operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., for those enrolled in extended care. The weekly cost is $100 for regular day and $125 for extended care. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more 24th Annual KJLH Women’s Health Expo Celebrates 35 Years of Black Infant Health Program The KJLH Women’s Health Expo, one of the largest health events for women in Southern California, will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the Long Beach Convention Center. The annual event will be sponsored by the Black Infant Health Program (BIH) Long Beach/Fresno. This year’s Expo will highlight the BIH Program’s significant 35-year milestone of unwavering commitment to providing culturally affirming services to Black women, birthing persons and their families across California. Click here City of Long Beach Announces Inaugural Youth Day in the LBC for People Ages 13 to 26 The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services Office of Youth Development announces Youth Day in the LBC, an exciting new event that will bring together youth ages 13 to 26 and empower them to connect around youth advocacy and youth resources. Youth Day in the LBC will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at Cabrillo High School. Learn more City to Host Annual Celebration of the Young Child in Downtown Long Beach The City of Long Beach will host the fifth annual Celebration of the Young Child from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2024, in Downtown Long Beach. This free event provides hands-on activities and showcases vendors who provide services and resources for children up to 8 years old. Click here City of Long Beach Launches Level Up LB: Extreme Small Business Makeover and Grant Program The City of Long Beach launched applications for the Level Up LB: Extreme Small Business Makeover and Grant program, a new program designed to propel small businesses towards success and sustainability. This initiative offers entrepreneurs a unique opportunity to connect with essential business support resources and undergo comprehensive workshops aimed at crafting new business and marketing plans. The program will assist 25 small business owners with support services, workshops and $10,000 in grant funding to take their small business to the next level. Click here City of Long Beach Launches Sidewalk to Success Program to Support Business Development The City of Long Beach, through the Long Beach Recovery Act, is funding a sidewalk vending support program, “Sidewalk to Success,” to help ease the financial burden for small businesses in the first year of the City’s recently approved Sidewalk Vending Ordinance currently in effect. Read more Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach has expanded the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here City Nature Challenge is Back at Willow Springs Park! Join us at Willow Springs Park for the annual City Nature Challenge this Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.! Use your skills as a community scientist to observe the local flora and fauna and share your findings using the iNaturalist app. Enjoy this opportunity to connect with nature and explore the park through community-led activities! Click here City Announces Grand Marshals for 2024 Long Beach Pride Parade We recently announced the grand marshals for the 41st annual Long Beach Pride Parade, taking place Sunday, May 19, 2024. This year’s parade, with the theme Rhythm and Rainbows, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. Led by the grand marshals, Long Beach Pride Parade will feature over 130 participating organizations, business and stakeholder groups showcasing a variety of vibrant and engaging floats and displays. The parade will commence at Ocean Boulevard and Lindero Avenue then travel along iconic stretches of Ocean Boulevard to Alamitos Avenue in Downtown. Click here 8th Annual Long Beach Touch-A-Truck Interactive Event The 8th annual Long Beach Touch-A-Truck interactive event is from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the beachfront Granada Ave. parking lot, 5000 E. The free event is co-sponsored by Councilwoman Kristina Duggan, Port of Long Beach, Justin Rudd’s nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT), EDCO, and American Integrated Services.
