VOLUME 13 | ISSUE 36 SEPTEMBER 7 - SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 9/11 Memorial Monday, September 11 | All Day Seaside Heroes Park 22851 Anza Avenue Thanks to local volunteers, the community is invited to view the special 9/11 Memorial at Seaside Heroes Park. Flags will be placed throughout the park in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Take a stroll through the park to honor and remember the 22nd anniversary of this tragic day. TORRANCE NEIGHBORHOOD OUTDOOR WARNING SIREN TESTING Thursday, September 14 | 10 A.M. TorranceNOW Sirens are part of the overall Torrance Community Warning System, which includes Torrance Alerts, Torrance Refining Company Siren, Crenshaw/Del Amo Barrier System, CitiSOUNDS radio, CitiCABLE, Emergency Alert System, and the recently tested Beach Emergency Evacuation Lights System (BEELS). TorranceNOW includes eight sirens strategically located in the City at all six fire stations, Southeast Library, and one at the corner of Lomita Boulevard and Madison Street. TorranceNOW Sirens is designed for early warning to the community in the event there is a significant emergency requiring a call-to-action.  TorranceNOW Sirens will be audibly tested on Thursday, September 14 at 10 a.m. TORRANCE CARES MAUI RELIEF   Over past couple weeks, the island of Maui suffered a devastating wildfire. Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   Teaching Kids Coyote Safety Most kids love animals. There is, however, a difference between domesticated animals, like a child’s beloved dog, and wild canines, like an urban coyote. Animals, including pets, are unpredictable and can unknowingly injure a child. Parents concerned about wildlife safety can teach children good decision-making skills when kids encounter wildlife. Teach children to maintain cautious, respectful distance whenever they might observe wildlife. Tips to keep kids safe during a coyote encounter: Never go near or feed animals you don’t know. What looks like a lost puppy, might be a coyote pup. Kids, and sometimes adults, cannot tell the difference from afar. Stop moving. Don’t run. Canines instinctively chase after anything that runs even if it means no harm. Make yourself big and loud. Yell in a mean, loud voice. Use your hands, a sweater or open your jacket to make yourself look bigger. Back away slowly. Move toward a building or a house for safety. Tell an adult. As soon as you can, tell an adult you know what you saw so they can report it to the City. The adult can better guide you and other kids in the area what to do next. Teaching kid’s safety around animals, especially those they don’t know, is an important skill. Please report coyote activity to one of Torrance’s reporting channels. Students who need community service work hours can bring their forms to be signed after work is completed. The park runs between Anza Avenue at the East end of Lomita Boulevard and Kathryn Avenue. Volunteers should meet at the Kathryn Avenue entrance by 22812 Kathryn Avenue Seaside Heroes Park bears its name by honoring three young men from the neighborhood who lost their lives serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
