City of Long Beach News: Learn How You Can Prepare for Hurricane Hilary

As you may have heard a significant weather system resulting from Hurricane Hilary, currently located off the coast of Mexico, is expected to impact several southern California communities. This weather event is expected to bring significant rain and wind throughout Long Beach with increased swells along the oceanfront. The storm system is expected to arrive early Sunday morning, Aug. 20, and into Monday, Aug. 21. We have all the details of how the City of Long Beach is preparing and resources on how you can prepare. We are continuing to ask the public to get involved in the City's budget process by attending one of our community meetings and/or by filling out our Digital Comment Card to give your feedback. The City's homelessness emergency response efforts continue. We recently announced the launch of our Community Crisis Response Team. The five-person team will respond to a subset of calls-for-service where mental health support, health education and resource navigation could support the safety and health outcomes for community members at the center of calls. City of Long Beach Preparing for Potential Significant Swells, Rain and Wind Resulting from Hurricane Hilary; Issues Advisory for Residents and Visitors We are preparing for a significant weather system resulting from Hurricane Hilary, currently located off the coast of Mexico. This weather event is expected to bring significant rain and wind throughout Long Beach with increased swells along the oceanfront. The storm system is expected to arrive early Sunday morning, Aug. 20, and into Monday, Aug. 21. Learn more Long Beach Temporarily Increases Shelter Operations for People Experiencing Homelessness in Anticipation of Local Severe Weather Systems Due to Hurricane Hilary As the City of Long Beach prepares for a significant weather system resulting from Hurricane Hilary, which is expected to bring significant rain and wind throughout Long Beach, the Homeless Services Bureau is temporarily increasing shelter services and outreach for people experiencing homelessness.  Beginning Saturday, Aug. 19 at noon, through Monday, Aug. 21, the City’s Multi-Service Center (MSC) will be open during the day and overnight to shelter up to 60 people experiencing homelessness from the harsh weather. People in need of shelter can visit the MSC. Learn more ‘READY Long Beach’ Set to Return September 9 Save the date! On Saturday, Sept. 9, our Long Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), in partnership with other City of Long Beach departments, regional disaster response agencies and community partners, will host the 7th Annual READY Long Beach Community Preparedness Expo. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid on the California State University, Long Beach. Community members are invited to attend the event and learn about how to prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks to Mass Distribute Water to People Experiencing Homelessness, Donating Water to Local Community Based Organizations to Further Efforts In an ongoing effort to increase access to clean water and other essentials for people experiencing homelessness, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services’ Homeless Services Bureau is offering cases of water to local community-based organizations and advocates supporting people experiencing homelessness. Community organizations interested in receiving cases of water are encouraged to submit a water donation request form. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partnerships with Community Organizations to Serve Residents Experiencing Homelessness The City of Long Beach is seeking partnerships with community organizations and local companies that are interested in collaborating with the City in our homelessness emergency response and assist in serving residents experiencing homelessness. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Watch now Get Involved in the City of Long Beach's Budget Process The City of Long Beach is underway with the Fiscal Year 2024 Budget development process. We want you to join the conversation and share your feedback on the proposed budget at one of the upcoming community meetings. Click here Share Your Feedback! The purpose of this Digital Comment Card is to provide an opportunity for the community to give additional feedback on the January community engagement results as well as the Proposed FY 24 Budget now that it has been developed. Click here Community Invited to Help Shape the Future of Downtown Long Beach and Nearby Shoreline The Long Beach Development Services Department is inviting residents and local stakeholders to get involved and provide input on a planning effort to update land use plans for the Downtown and adjacent waterfront areas. The initiative will update regulations for development in Downtown and establish a common vision for the future of the Downtown Shoreline area. The Department will host an in-person open house event to solicit public input on the plans, on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Billie Jean King Main Library. Those interested in attending are requested to RSVP online. Learn more Community Invited to Attend Homebuyer Information and Resource Workshops The Long Beach Development Services Department will host another workshop just added! These workshops provide residents with valuable homeownership information and resources. The free evening workshops will present details about the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program (Program) as well as information about various federal and county housing programs available to residents. Full eligibility requirements and guidelines, including materials and applications in Spanish, Tagalog and Khmer, are available on the Program website. Learn more The City of Long Beach is seeking to partner with a community organization that can establish and facilitate an ongoing Latinx Health Collaborative. This opportunity will provide one-time seed funding to lead and sustain a collaborative space for Latinx-owned and -serving organizations to coordinate health equity efforts and direct services informed by the City’s Mi Vida Cuenta COVID-19 Latinx Health Initiative Report and Workplan (Mi Vida Cuenta). Learn more Long Beach to Transition City’s Meeting Management System to New Platform This October This October, the City of Long Beach will transition its agenda and meeting management system to a new platform called OneMeeting (formerly PrimeGov), for its agendas, minutes and videos for all City Council, Committee, Board and Commission meetings. The Office of the City Clerk will present the City’s anticipated transition plan and updates regarding this Citywide initiative to the Long Beach City Council during the Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023, meeting. More than 700 activities in art, music, nature, fitness, special interest subjects, adult sports leagues and aquatics will begin in September and continue through November 2023. Learn more Movies in the Park Are Still Playing This Summer! Movies in the Park, sponsored by Signal Hill Petroleum and Partners of Parks, are still offering free, family-friendly movies at various parks throughout Long Beach and Signal Hill now through August 25. Movies begin at dusk. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic-style dinners and their family and friends. Click here City of Long Beach Seeks Partner for Electric Bike Lending Library Program The City of Long Beach announced an Invitation to Bid to provide bikes and equipment for the City’s upcoming Electric Bike (E-Bike) Lending Library program. By enabling Long Beach residents to borrow e-bikes for an extended period of time, the E-Bike Lending Library program will expand familiarity with e-bike technology, increase e-bike ridership within the city and encourage an active, zero-emission mode of travel. Learn more Don't Risk a Utility Shutoff! As we all struggled through the COVID-19 crisis, Long Beach Utilities paused utility shutoffs and late fees for nonpayment. Nearly three years later, with the emergency now behind us, we are resuming standard business operations. As of Aug. 15, 2023, utility disconnections will resume for water, natural gas, sewer and refuse accounts with unpaid debt. If you have an outstanding balance, take action now to avoid utility shutoff. Pay your bill or contact us. We are here to help figure it out. Learn more Artesia Great Boulevard Project In preparation for street pavement restoration on Artesia Boulevard, there will be several street closures impacting the area during the month of August 2023. The City’s contractor, Granite Construction will be performing pavement work which will allow only one open lane on either side of the median at the locations listed below. Harbor Avenue to Muriel Avenue Atlantic Avenue to Lime Avenue Union Pacific Railroad Tracks to Downey Avenue Updates Market Street Improvements Project The City's contractor is scheduled to perform asphalt paving, barring weather or other unforeseen delays, on: Monday, August 21, 2023 – Wednesday, August 23, 2023 Market Street between Long Beach Boulevard and Lime Avenue No parking signs will be posted on both sides of Market Street at a minimum of three days prior to the start of work. *Temporary full street closure of Market Street will be necessary to complete this paving work. Access in and out of driveways during the construction working hours will therefore be restricted and is advisable to remove vehicles from your driveways or parking garages by 7:00 AM. Access will be restored by 5:00 PM. Click here Bay Shore Neighborhood Library to Close for Scheduled Renovation Our Long Beach Public Library’s Bay Shore Neighborhood Library is temporarily closed for a scheduled renovation that started Monday, August 14. Due to the extensive renovation work to be conducted, an estimated eight-month closure is anticipated. During this period, all library services, including exterior book returns, will be unavailable at this location. During Bay Shore Neighborhood Library’s temporary closure, three nearby neighborhood libraries are available for patrons to enjoy: Alamitos Neighborhood Library (1836 E. 3rd St.) Brewitt Neighborhood Library (4036 E. Anaheim St.) Los Altos Neighborhood Library (5614 E. Long Beach’s 12th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival to Take Place August 19 at Houghton Park The City of Long Beach and the Office of Ninth District Councilmember Joni Ricks-Oddie present the 12th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival, headlined by American funk band, The Original Lakeside. The festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Houghton Park.
