Post Date: 07/18/2024 10:45 AM

HERMOSA BEACH – (July 18, 2024) – During a special City Council meeting Monday night, the Hermosa Beach City Council voted to elevate Mayor Pro Tem Dean Francois to the position of mayor and to name Councilmember Rob Saemann as mayor pro tem. Councilmembers, community members and elected leaders also praised outgoing Mayor Justin requMassey for his leadership and dedication to the community.

In his comments during the meeting, Mayor Francois thanked his colleagues for electing him as mayor.

“I have learned a lot by working with former Mayor Massey and thank him for his time and service.” said Mayor Dean Francois. "As Hermosa Beach’s new mayor, I am committed to listening to and working for every community member, creating an inclusive environment where residents feel heard and valued. I want to thank my colleagues and the Hermosa Beach community for their support and trust, and I look forward to working together to make our best little beach city even better.”

As he passed the gavel to Mayor Francois, former Mayor Massey thanked those in attendance and wished the mayor and mayor pro tem good luck.

Newly elected Mayor Pro Tem Saemann also expressed his appreciation for his colleagues’ service and thanked them for the honor of being chosen to serve as mayor pro tem.

“We can all lead the city from any one of these five chairs. Sitting in the center chair gives the mayor an opportunity to set the tone for council, build consensus, represent the city, and move the city forward,” said Mayor Pro Tem Saemann. “In the second chair, as mayor pro tem, I have an opportunity to help the mayor, prepare for the future and stand at the ready if needed. Sitting in all of these chairs is a full-time job that requires dignity, responsibility and commitment. It is an honor to be elected as mayor pro tem, and I look forward to working with my colleagues and City staff to continue to benefit our community.”

The mayor and mayor pro tem will serve just over nine months in their respective positions.
