City of Long Beach News: 👻 Celebrate Halloween Safely and Don't Miss out on Día de los Muertos Celebration!

Stay informed Click here to view in your browser. Welcome to our City Newsletter! Greetings! As we approach the Halloween weekend we are reminding the community to please celebrate safely! Don't drink/smoke and drive; please make sure minors are always accompanied while trick-o-treating; and most importantly have fun! Don't miss out on the highly anticipated Día de los Muertos Parade and Celebration happening Saturday, November 4. The City's Grand Parade will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by an Arte y Ofrendas Festival that will go well into the evening. Make sure to purchase your tickets to the Festival in advance here. Check out some more spooktacular events happening in Long Beach this weekend below. It's flu season and there is nothing more spookier than getting sick with the flu. Protect yourself and your family this season. We have a list of flu vaccine clinics throughout Long Beach. As part of our ongoing efforts in supporting people experiencing homelessness, we are inviting the community to get involved by participating in our annual 2024 Point in Time Count happening in January. We are also encouraging the community to participate in an upcoming virtual community meeting to learn about the Tiny Modular Shelter project, or “Tiny Homes,” the City’s next variation of interim housing options for people experiencing homelessness. City of Long Beach Encourages Treats, not Tricks, for a Safe Halloween With Halloween approaching and all the festivities happening this weekend the City of Long Beach reminds the community to please celebrate safely on Tuesday, Oct. 31, and all season long. Long Beach to Host Festive Street Parade in Celebration of Día de Los Muertos The City of Long Beach and the Office of First District Councilwoman Mary Zendejas proudly present the eighth annual Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, Celebration – a free, family-friendly celebration of life in remembrance of loved ones who have died. This year’s celebration will include the City’s festive street parade on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Downtown Long Beach, coinciding with an Arte y Ofrendas Festival at Rainbow Lagoon that will go well into the evening, hosted by Grand Parade Día De Los Muertos Inc. Learn more Long Beach Seeks Volunteers for 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services is seeking 300 community volunteers to help conduct the 2024 Point in Time Count, its street count of people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, which will take place on Jan. 25, 2024. Volunteer registration is now available online and will remain open until the available volunteer slots are filled. If more than 300 people register to volunteer for the Count, people will be added to a waitlist. Click here Long Beach to Host ‘Tiny Homes’ Virtual Community Meeting on October 30 The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services invites community members to participate in an upcoming virtual community meeting where they can learn about the Tiny Modular Shelter project, or “Tiny Homes,” the City’s next variation of interim housing options for people experiencing homelessness. The virtual community meeting will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, via Zoom. Advanced registration is required to receive the link to the meeting. Interpretation services will be available in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog with additional languages available upon advanced request. Click here City Extends Operations for Safe Parking Program, Relocates Site to Close to Multi-Service Center The City of Long Beach has extended its Safe Parking Program and relocated the operating site to a larger, medium-term location near the City’s Multi-Service Center. The Safe Parking Program provides a safe, dignified environment for people living in their vehicles to park overnight while also being connected to supportive services and temporary or permanent housing. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks to Mass Distribute Water to People Experiencing Homelessness, Donating Water to Local Community Based Organizations to Further Efforts In an ongoing effort to increase access to clean water and other essentials for people experiencing homelessness, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services’ Homeless Services Bureau is offering cases of water to local community-based organizations and advocates supporting people experiencing homelessness. Community organizations interested in receiving cases of water are encouraged to submit a water donation request form. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partnerships with Community Organizations to Serve Residents Experiencing Homelessness The City of Long Beach is seeking partnerships with community organizations and local companies that are interested in collaborating with the City in our homelessness emergency response and assist in serving residents experiencing homelessness. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Watch now Alison King Appointed as Acting Director of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services City Manager Tom Modica recently announced the appointment of Alison King as the Acting Director for the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services. Currently serving as the Bureau Manager for the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach, Ms. King brings to the position five years of experience as a public health administrator and over 20 years of human services experience. The City will conduct a national recruitment to fill the permanent position. Read more Long Beach Health Department to Host Food Safety Workshop to Address Requirements to Obtain a Temporary Permit for a Food Stand at a Community Event The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health Bureau is hosting a food safety workshop inviting business owners, entrepreneurs and all interested in operating a food business at community events or certified farmers’ markets. The workshop will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, at Long Beach Energy Resources (2400 E. Spring St.). Click here City of Long Beach Announces New Resource for Families and Caregivers Our Health Department has been awarded a grant to expand the Long Beach Resource Line to answer questions related to milestones and developments for children younger than five. The initiative is part of Help Me Grow LA, an effort of First 5 LA and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, to help connect people to support for children who may need early childhood development resources. Additionally, the online City of Long Beach Resource Directory, powered by Unite Us, will include critical resources through the digital map that will help residents connect to early childhood developmental and intervention resources. Click here City Seeks Partner to Operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market in Long Beach The City of Long Beach is seeking a partner to implement and operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market (MHFM) in Long Beach. The goal of the MHFM is to increase access to affordable fresh produce in neighborhoods defined as having poor food access as well as increase opportunities for residents to be connected to other services and resources that address the social determinants of health and improve health outcomes. The City of Long Beach will be procuring and building out a vehicle designed to operate as a MHFM. Click here City Seeks Partner to Expand Legal Services within the Long Beach Justice Fund We are seeking to partner with one or more qualified organizations to provide free legal representation and outreach, through the Long Beach Justice Fund, to people who are low-income immigrants and who are at risk of deportation. The expansion of the Justice Fund will provide community connection services, such as outreach, legal service education, client advocacy, and additional forms of legal representation to safeguard residents from potentially facing deportation. Learn more Community Invited to Provide Feedback on LGBTQ+ Cultural District Visioning Process The Long Beach Community Development Department has created concepts for a vision and feasibility plan for the new LGBTQ+ Cultural District and the community is invited to identify and prioritize which improvements are most important by completing an online survey. The survey will be available in various languages including English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog through Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023. Every year, LEO fundraises money for its legacy Scholarship Program. This special event assists LEO in maintaining its promise to help students reach their full potential, regardless of race, income, or background. 100% of the proceeds from the Churro 5K will go to LEO's scholarship fund and continue to help support scholars pursuing post-secondary education.
