Dear Friends,
This week, we broke ground on the new North Hollywood Health Center (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-leads-groundbreaking-ceremony-for-92m-north-hollywood-health-center-laying-the-foundation-for-a-healthier-future/) , which will be a one-stop shop for care from the Los Angeles County Departments of Public Health (http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/) , Mental Health (https://dmh.lacounty.gov/) , and Health Services (https://dhs.lacounty.gov/) . Public Works (https://dpw.lacounty.gov/) is slated to complete the three-story center by the end of 2026, which will be an incredible resource to meet the diverse health care needs of the community. North Hollywood was recognized as a community in high need due to the limited number of healthcare facilities and the large population of Medi-Cal recipients. This new center (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-leads-groundbreaking-ceremony-for-92m-north-hollywood-health-center-laying-the-foundation-for-a-healthier-future/) will directly
address those gaps, providing much-needed care not only to the surrounding community, but to the entire San Fernando Valley. What makes this project so special is its focus on bringing an array of healthcare services together. Onsite, patients will have access to support across the healthcare spectrum all in one place. I look forward to seeing the incredible care this space (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-leads-groundbreaking-ceremony-for-92m-north-hollywood-health-center-laying-the-foundation-for-a-healthier-future/) will provide for patients once it opens.
Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger
Supervisor, Fifth District
Meet Coco, a smart and playful three-year-old German Shepherd, and Pebbles, a curious and cuddly 10-month-old Labrador Retriever mix. If you'd like to open your heart and home to a new pet, consider adopting one of them from the Palmdale Animal Care Center, which is open for drop-ins Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plus, in honor of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, fees are waived for dogs from Oct. 15 to 31!
Addressing the Pet Over-Population Crisis
At this week's Board meeting, I introduced a motion to tackle our shelters' overpopulation crisis by increasing our capacity to hire and retain veterinarians, veterinary technicians, animal control officers, and care attendants.

Happy Trails for Kids provides a fun, uplifting space where foster youth can connect with one another and with their inner child. I’m deeply proud of their partnership with the County, especially as we’ve deeded 135 acres in Acton for their campsite to ensure DCFS (https://dcfs.lacounty.gov/) youth have a safe and stable place to make memories and friends. It was truly an honor to be recognized with their Foster Youth Champion Award on Thursday and to be their partner in this important work.

Addressing homelessness cannot and should not look the same in Downtown L.A. as it does in our North County communities. This week, I sat down with our partners from the City of Palmdale and City of Lancaster, L.A. City Mayor Karen Bass, and L.A. City Councilmember Nithya Raman to discuss both regional and localized solutions to provide services, shelter, and housing for those on our streets and in our deserts.

At this week's Board meeting, we approved our $49.2 billion budget, which I believe truly reflects our priorities. I'm proud that the budget allocates funding toward the unique needs of our communities, ranging from bolstering mental health services to combatting illegal dumping.

If we want to address our region’s most pressing issues, business leaders have to be at the table. Thank you to the Antelope Valley Chambers of Commerce for inviting me to share about the efforts underway at the County to invest in solutions for the Antelope Valley.

For 25 years, Equality California (https://www.eqca.org/) has advocated for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community. At their Equality Awards, we celebrated everything their 900,000 members have accomplished as the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization and renewed our commitment to continue this work into the future.
LGBTQ+ Commission
The Los Angeles County LGBTQ+ Commission (https://lgbtq.lacounty.gov/) is excited to announce they have opened applications for two at-large commissioners! The application will close on Friday, Nov. 1. If you or someone you know would be a good fit, I encourage you to apply.

The Autry’s first ever block party last year was such a success that they decided to make it a yearly tradition! Their second annual event was a fun-filled day of live music, engaging exhibits, community vendors, horses, rides, and games that brought out the child in all of us.

John Shea committed his life to ensuring students had the funds they needed to get the education they deserved. Naming the Paraclete High School athletic complex in his honor is a fitting tribute to his legacy of generosity, encouraging students to follow in the footsteps of his faith.

I’m thrilled we’ve formally designated Old Glory as a Los Angeles County landmark. This majestic tree, which is more than 400 years old, is beloved by the Santa Clarita Valley community and stands not only as a symbol of resilience and community spirit, but as an important remnant of the rich ecological heritage of the region. In 2002, a proposed subdivision threatened Old Glory’s existence, sparking significant public outcry. Environmental activist John Quigley, known for his dedication to preserve heritage trees, joined the cause and famously lived in Old Glory’s branches for 71 consecutive days. Old Glory deserves to be protected and preserved so future generations can enjoy it and I'm proud I authored the motion to ensure that it will be.

Celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day with The Music Center during two terrific events! On Saturday, Oct. 12, shop at a marketplace on Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center, meet local Indigenous-serving resource groups, participate in artist-led workshops, and experience visual artwork and live performances featuring the rich cultural heritage and contemporary expressions of Indigenous communities. Next Saturday, Oct. 19, the festivities continue, including a live drumming performance, DJ sets, art workshops, and a craft market.
