Keeping up with Kathryn

Dear Friends,

Last weekend, Altadena residents were all smiles as we celebrated the reopening of the Altadena Library District (https://www.altadenalibrary.org/) , made even more special with a reading by LeVar Burton (https://levarburton.com/) !

The Altadena libraries are not just places where you go to check out amazing books. They’re where neighbors, friends, and family connect, learn, and grow. What makes Altadena special is the people and places who call it home. Though the road to recovery will be long, the libraries’ reopening is a great indicator that we’re on the right track and that we can and will build back even stronger than before. As we rebuild, the cultural hubs that make Altadena special will continue to be part of the fabric and identity of our neighborhoods.

The library will always stand as a beacon of hope and a gathering space for all. At Saturday's event, I saw glimpses of a return to the Altadena I’ve always loved. Let’s celebrate how far we’ve come so far, and continue the momentum that we’ve set in motion so we can reopen more of our favorite spaces.

Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger
Chair of the Board
Supervisor, Fifth District

Meet our pets of the week! Our dynamic duo are a bonded pair that include Misu, a one-year-old Dogo Argentino that serves as a seeing eye dog for her blind companion Ivory, a two-year-old Siberian Husky mix. Both are sweet, friendly, and loving dogs that would bring joy to any household.

We're also featuring Andy Warhowl, a fun-loving and energetic six-month-old German Shepherd mix.

If you'd like to open your heart and home to a new pet, consider adopting them from the Palmdale Animal Care Center, which is open for drop-ins Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

March Meowness Promotion
If cats are more your style, March Meowness is here! All month long, you can take home a feline MVP (Most Valuable Pet) for just $14. Adoption fees for all cats and kittens are reduced to that price through the end of March.

FEMA announced today that they've extended the deadline for residents to submit Right of Entry forms to opt into debris removal until April 15, and are now opening the debris removal program to multi-family housing. This will allow residents more breathing room to fully understand their options and make an informed decision about debris removal. We are on the road to recovery, and these updates will ensure more residents get the help they need and deserve.

The L.A. County Library's annual bookmark contest spotlights the incredible creativity of our youth and inspires a deeper love of reading. Congratulations to our four talented Fifth District winners: Karen from Duarte, Sharon from La Crescenta, Grace from Quartz Hill, and Sirui from Stevenson Ranch! You can pick up your very own bookmark with their amazing art on it at your local library.

In honor of National Social Work Month, I was proud to commend Five Acres (https://5acres.org/) , Sycamores (https://www.sycamores.org/news/) , and Bourne Family Services (https://www.bournefamilyservices.org/) , three amazing foster youth agencies serving Altadena and Pasadena, at our Board meeting this week. All three organizations do invaluable work to support children and families, and while they have always been committed to their clients, they’ve gone above and beyond in the wake of the Eaton Fire.

Each of our County departments are led by capable public servants who have the best interest of our residents and workforce in mind. Thank you to the Los Angeles County Management Council for inviting me to sit down with you on Wednesday at the Arboretum to talk about my leadership journey in the County!

The Twilight Club of Pasadena was formed in 1895 for local leaders to gather and discuss pressing issues. Today, the group’s members include chief executives, judges, college presidents, hospital executives, partners of law firms, technology innovators, and more. I was grateful they invited me to speak with them this week about Eaton Fire recovery and am thankful for their engagement when the community needs it most.

Eliot Arts Magnet was among the schools devastated by the Eaton Fire, and their sister school Altadena Arts Magnet was also displaced amid the fire. In addition to being without classroom space, the schools are also without an auditorium to rehearse and perform their annual spring musical. In an effort to uplift students’ spirits and provide them with a sense of normalcy in the midst of the loss they’ve experienced, Center Theatre Group generously offered to partner with the Pasadena Unified School District and Pasadena Playhouse to host Shrek The Musical JR. at the iconic Ahmanson Theatre at The Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles. The special one-night-only performance will take place on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. and will bring a fun night of entertainment for families performed by the incredible students in the cast. Admission for the performance is free with reservations. Optional donations from the performance will go toward rebuilding arts programs for students impacted by the Eaton
Fire.
