VPAN steps into the breach for veteran’s family facing eviction

Lawrence Nala and Kids

Lawrence Narcisse and his two children were out of options the day he contacted VPAN.

Narcisse, an Army veteran, was on the verge of losing his job and was about to lose his home, as well. One day prior to his eviction, he sought out VPAN Program Manager and military family member Christina Rheingold with Volunteers of America Los Angeles-Supervisorial District 2 (VOALA-SD2) in a last-ditch effort to stay off the street.

“He was in tears, saying he almost didn’t reach out because he felt like he was getting help before, but it ultimately led to him losing his apartment, so he lacked trust in the system,” Rheingold said.

After being laid off no less than four times in 18 months during the pandemic, Narcisse felt he was at a dead end. “Despite other efforts to get help elsewhere, I felt abandoned, lost, and hopeless,” he recalled. “My family wouldn't help; I was panicking for me and the kids.

“Christina was such a blessing, she listened and came up with solutions to help me, not just toss me to another program.”

Narcisse’s case was assigned to Battle Buddy and Navy vet Devina Escalera (VOALA-SD2), who swiftly arranged for temporary housing in a hotel, along with WiFi so he could continue working. She also connected him with the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program for a longer-term housing solution.

Narcisse emphasized how Rheingold’s team treated him and his family like they matter, a simple concept but invaluable to those seeking assistance. “The most important thing is that my kids do not experience the conditions of homelessness and seeing me treated like someone who’s a loser and a bum,” he said.

“I am far from that.”
