Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   WEEKLY COYOTE REPORTS AVAILABLE ON THE CITY'S WEBSITE Data collection and tracking coyote activity are critical components of an effective coyote management plan. The purpose of monitoring human-coyote interactions is to document where coyotes are frequently seen and to identify locations where increased potential for encounters may occur. Gathering specific data on incidents allows for targeting educational campaigns in a timely manner to specific areas where increased coyote activity is reported. By educating members of the community, residents can make informed decisions to safeguard their pets and family and avoid unwanted coyote interactions.  Residents and the community at-large play a critical role providing their feedback to the City’s Coyote program. What happens if you leave a half-eaten turkey on your front lawn? Let’s start off with… this is not a good idea. As you can imagine animals, big and small, would congregate for a feast. Feeding wildlife is dangerous. It can lead to human injury, animal overpopulation and disease. Reasons food sources should be removed and secured away from animals. Wildlife feeding is illegal. Don’t break the law. It harms animals. Animals learn to depend on people for food. They may forego hunting and opt for an easy meal fed by humans. It can also physically make animals sick. An animal’s body may not process human food; it may poison the animal. It invites wildlife, like coyotes, to your yard. Coyotes prefer to live in open green spaces but travel to residential areas for easily accessible food, such as unsecured trash, unenclosed compost, vegetables or fallen fruit from gardens. Instead of fearing people, coyotes can establish a positive association with humans. A coyote’s canine relative, the domestic dog, is food-conditioned during training. Sit Fido. Get a treat. A coyote’s behavior also changes when food rewards are intentionally or accidentally provided by people. It learns people are not a threat. Most coyote attacks on people are related to direct or indirect feeding. Investigations by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reveal a majority of humans attacked, if not all, occurred near a site where coyotes were fed.  During Thanksgiving and the days that follow, avoid unwanted coyote visits by removing food sources. Wrap leftover food in tight trash bags and close garbage bins securely.
