Discover what our City has to offer!     Does it really make a difference whether you throw your organic waste in the trash versus your green, organics cart? It really does! Organics make up roughly one-third of what’s disposed of in California's landfills. As a result, not only do those organic materials take up the already limited amounts of landfill space in California, they also create greenhouse gasses like methane which contribute to climate change. So not only does using your green cart divert organic waste from landfills, it also gives that material the chance to be processed into nutrient-rich compost! Here’s are 3 benefits of Organics Recycling: Reduces the need for landfills Reduces greenhouse gas emission Restores the Soil USED OIL RECYCLING PROGRAM Did you know? Just one quart of motor oil can pollute up to 250,000 gallons of clean water! You can prevent oil pollution through the City's Used Oil Recycling Program. The purpose of monitoring human-coyote interactions is to document where coyotes are frequently seen and to identify locations where increased potential for encounters may occur. Gathering specific data on incidents allows for targeting educational campaigns in a timely manner to specific areas where increased coyote activity is reported. By educating members of the community, residents can make informed decisions to safeguard their pets and family and avoid unwanted coyote interactions. Residents and the community at-large play a critical role providing their feedback to the City’s Coyote program. Reporting through official City channels helps staff record and track coyote sightings and incidents. View the weekly Coyote Activity Report on the City's Coyote page. See a coyote? Prevent Coyote Dens by Landscaping in Early Winter Beginning in January, coyotes commence the once a year mating process. Once pregnant the coyotes look for a den to birth and nurse pups until they’re stronger. Coyotes are selective when choosing a denning site. Dens are found in secluded areas with protective cover, such as foliage, to shield pups from inclement weather, predators and other threats. The den is only used temporarily in spring time. Clearing out potential denning spots and trimming ground-level shrubbery outside your home in winter will reduce hiding spaces and potential dens during coyote pupping season. If a den is disturbed by landscapers, curious pets, or people, the pack will protect their territory. Coyotes are known to ‘escort’ or walk people and pets out of the denning area. For details on wildlife-smart landscaping, conduct the At-Home Coyote Prevention Checklist outside your home. Where can coyotes den? Hillsides Culverts Rock piles Hollowed out tree trunks Under porches or openings under man made shelter.   LANDLORD WORKSHOP Thursday, January 4, 2024 | FREE Katy Geissert Civic Center Library Meeting Room 3301 Torrance Boulevard Attend this free workshop if you are a landlord in LA County.
