We are encouraging the community to check on friends, family and neighbors who are home-bound to make sure they are not affected by the heat. If the sun is making it hard to get through the day, then come enjoy the cool air conditioning at several Long Beach Community Centers. We have a list of cooling centers near you that will offer a cool place to stay during center hours. Some centers may be opened after hours on an emergency basis. ICYMI, we have more exciting news about the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Long Beach. They recently announced more than a dozen venue assignments for Olympic sports, utilizing sports venues and locations in the City of Los Angeles and neighboring cities of Long Beach and Carson. The announcement confirms seven Olympic sporting events to be held here in Long Beach! Homelessness remains a priority for the City of Long Beach. We are hosting our 12th donation drive-thru event on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Long Beach Health Main Facilities Center, located at 2525 Grand Ave. Community members who wish to make a material difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness. City of Long Beach Advises Residents to Take Precautions Against Summer Heat With excessive temperatures happening throughout the summer our City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis is reminding residents to take precautions against the heat. All City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations are available as designated cooling centers during their normal business hours. Please contact Community Centers and Library locations ahead of time to confirm they are open in the case of unexpected closures. Click here LA28 Confirms Seven Sporting Events, Venues to be Held in Long Beach for the 2028 Olympic Games The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games announced more than a dozen venue assignments for Olympic sports, utilizing sports venues and locations in the City of Los Angeles and neighboring cities of Long Beach and Carson. The announcement confirms seven Olympic sporting events to be held in Long Beach. As a Venue City, Long Beach is set to host the largest number of sporting events other than the host City of Los Angeles for the LA28 Games. Click here   Restored, Renovated Historic Terminal Reopens at Long Beach Airport Later this month, Long Beach Airport (LGB) will celebrate the reopening of its Historic Terminal building, which has been closed for more than a year for extensive renovations. The $17.8 million project, part of the $125 million Phase II – Terminal Area Improvements Program, includes a seismic retrofit and meticulous restoration of the building’s classic 1941 design elements. Click here City of Long Beach Seeks Donations to Support People Experiencing Homelessness During Warm Summer Months As part of our ongoing commitment to support people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, we will host our 12th donation drive-thru event on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The event will take place at the Long Beach Health Main Facilities Center, located at 2525 Grand Ave. Click here Long Beach’s Multi-Service Center Selected as Site for Pet Food Pantry Our Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) recently announced a new pet food pantry, sponsored by Project Street Vet, a nonprofit serving pets belonging to people experiencing homelessness, and Kismet, a new pet brand co-founded by entertainers and entrepreneurs John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Legend was on site to celebrate the opening, with Kismet donating over 2,500 pounds of food and treats for dogs to the Project Street Vet initiative. Read more City Breaks Ground on New Affordable Housing Project in Midtown The City of Long Beach helped commemorate the start of construction for 1400 Long Beach, a 163-unit affordable housing project in the Midtown area for low-income individuals and families. The six-story development by Meta Housing will be comprised of one-, two- and three-bedroom units and feature numerous amenities including a community room, an outdoor courtyard and children’s play area. Learn more Long Beach’s 13th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival to Take Place August 3 at Houghton Park The City of Long Beach and the Office of Ninth District Councilmember Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie present the 13th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival, taking place on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave., Long Beach, 90805). The afternoon event will feature a lineup of incredible music and entertainment, a food and beer garden, a Kids Zone, and a variety of vendor and community resource booths.
