Keeping up with Kathryn

Nov. 1, 2024

Dear Friends,

Election Day is almost here. There are many ways you can cast your ballot to fit your schedule between now and Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder (http://LAVote.gov) has a variety of resources available to make the process convenient for voters in every neighborhood. Check out the links below to make your voting plan.

Vote By Mail: If you plan to vote by mail, make sure to mail in or drop off your ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day to ensure it’s counted.

Ballot Drop Boxes: There are more than 400 official ballot drop boxes for you to securely submit your ballot. Ballots are picked up each day by County staff to ensure your ballot’s safety and timely delivery. Visit locator.lavote.gov to find a drop box location near you.

Track Your Ballot: Voters who send in their ballots by mail or by drop box can track their ballots through the State’s Where’s My Ballot? tracker tool to see when it’s picked up, brought to the ballot processing center, and successfully counted. Go to California.BallotTrax.net to sign up.

Vote Centers: There are a total of 648 Vote Centers across Los Angeles County to choose from. Voters can cast their ballots in person at any location to vote conveniently near work or home. More than 100 locations opened 11 days before Election Day from Oct. 26 to Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The remaining Vote Centers will open four days before Election Day from Nov. 2 to Nov. 4 with the same hours. All Vote Centers will be open on Election Day, Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Head to locator.lavote.gov to find a convenient Vote Center location.

Interactive Sample Ballot: To keep track of how you’re planning to vote, and to cut down on time at the Vote Center, you can mark your Interactive Sample Ballot on your phone ahead of time and upload it to a voting machine using a QR code. You will still be able to make changes before casting your ballot. Go to LAVote.gov/ISB to get started on your sample ballot.

Watch Democracy in Action: If you’re interested to see the ballot counting process, the Registrar Recorder’s office has a livestream of their processing center on their website throughout the voting period and on Election Night. Visit LAVote.gov/LiveStream to tune in.

Thank you for participating in the democratic process! Your vote is your voice and casting your ballot (http://LAVote.gov) truly matters.

Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger

Meet Perelli, an energetic and independent five-year-old tortie, and Vickie, a social and cuddly four-year-old German Shepherd. If you'd like to open your heart and home to a new pet, consider adopting one of them from the Palmdale Animal Care Center, which is open for drop-ins Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Veterans' Pet Services Promotion
In honor of Veterans Day coming up, there’s a special promotion for free spay and neuter services for veterans’ pets. Veterans who live in North County—including those in unincorporated areas and the cities of Lancaster, Palmdale, Santa Clarita, and San Fernando—can take their pets to the Simi Valley Nonprofit Spay and Neuter Clinic for free services throughout the entire month of November. Call 805-584-3823 and use the code words “Veteran Veteran” (yes, twice!) when calling to make your appointment.

I am deeply proud of and grateful for my partnership with our public safety leaders to serve and strengthen our communities. It was an honor and privilege to be recognized this week by the Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County (https://poalac.org/) with their President’s Award (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-is-bestowed-prestigious-presidents-award-by-peace-officers-association-of-l-a-county/) alongside so many incredible other honorees I admire.

On my way to our Metro (https://www.metro.net/riding/safety-security/) Board meeting yesterday, I got a look at the new weapons detection system being tested at Union Station. This screening technology is another important tool to keep passengers and staff safe (https://www.metro.net/riding/safety-security/) .

Wolf Connection (https://wolfconnection.org/) 's innovative and powerful therapy programs not only offer a sanctuary for these beautiful animals, but provide a sense of belonging, restoration, inspiration, and connection for visitors. It was a pleasure to visit their site in Palmdale again this week joined by the Department of Animal Care and Control (https://animalcare.lacounty.gov/) and Los Angeles County Management Council (https://managementcouncil.lacounty.gov/) .

Exciting news! We've officially secured the funding to extend the Metro A Line (formerly the Gold Line) to Montclair. This $798 million means residents along the 210 corridor will have better access to cultural, recreational, and educational assets.

Congratulations to Huntington Health for breaking ground on the Terri and Jerry Kohl Medical Pavilion! This new space will greatly expand access for residents, especially to exceptional specialty services like cancer and cardiovascular care. It wouldn't be possible without the incredible generosity of my friends the Kohls.
