City Hall and Torrance Public Libraries will be closed from Friday, December 29, 2023 - Monday, January 1, 2024 in observance of the New Year's Day. Regular hours of operation will resume Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Street sweeping is canceled on New Year's Day. Monday refuse and recycling will be collected on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. LOOK FOR THE TORRANCE ROSE FLOAT ASSOCIATION AT THE 2024 PASADENA TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE Tonight, Torrance CitiCABLE will be present at Officials' Night, capturing footage of volunteers adding the finishing details to the float as well as city leaders who will get a sneak peek. On New Year's Day, Torrance CitiCABLE will be at the 135th Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade sharing pictures and videos from the iconic event. CITY OF TORRANCE PERMIT CENTER CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING Now - Thursday, January 18, 2024 | FREE We will recycle your Christmas tree free of charge! There are several ways to recycle your tree. See which method best suits your needs: Using Green Waste Container: Trees six (6) feet or smaller can be placed directly into your green waste container and will be collected during normal collection times. Trees must be unflocked, less than six feet long (without cutting), no stands, tinsel, or ornaments. If not using a Green Waste Container: Place the tree at the curb at least four feet from your collection containers by 7:00 a.m. on your regularly scheduled collection day. A separate truck will collect the trees to use as mulch and landfill cover. Please note: Flocked tree cannot be recycled. Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   WEEKLY COYOTE REPORTS AVAILABLE ON THE CITY'S WEBSITE Data collection and tracking coyote activity are critical components of an effective coyote management plan. The purpose of monitoring human-coyote interactions is to document where coyotes are frequently seen and to identify locations where increased potential for encounters may occur. Gathering specific data on incidents allows for targeting educational campaigns in a timely manner to specific areas where increased coyote activity is reported. By educating members of the community, residents can make informed decisions to safeguard their pets and family and avoid unwanted coyote interactions.  Residents and the community at-large play a critical role providing their feedback to the City’s Coyote program. Prevent Coyote Dens by Landscaping in Early Winter Beginning in January, coyotes commence the once a year mating process. Once pregnant the coyotes look for a den to birth and nurse pups until they’re stronger. Coyotes are selective when choosing a denning site. Dens are found in secluded areas with protective cover, such as foliage, to shield pups from inclement weather, predators and other threats. The den is only used temporarily in spring time. Clearing out potential denning spots and trimming ground-level shrubbery outside your home in winter will reduce hiding spaces and potential dens during coyote pupping season.  If a den is disturbed by landscapers, curious pets, or people, the pack will protect their territory. Coyotes are known to ‘escort’ or walk people and pets out of the denning area. Alert SouthBay, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), will conduct a test of the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) capability for the South Bay Region on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at approximately 11:20 a.m. All wireless cellphones should receive the message only once. Here's what to expect during the test: At approximately 11:20 a.m. PST, cell towers will broadcast the test for 30 minutes. During this time, WEA-compatible wireless phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and in a geographic area where the For consumers, the message on their phones will read: "THIS IS A TEST of the Alert SouthBay Regional Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed. The Hometown Heroes application is now available online. It also will be made available at City Hall or by contacting the City via email at Veterans@TorranceCA.Gov. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2023. The cost to sponsor a banner for the 2024 program is $300. Incomplete applications or applications received after the submission date will not make the printing and installation deadline and should be resubmitted during the subsequent year's application period.
