City of Long Beach News: Get Involved in the Proposed Fiscal Year 2024 Budget!

This week we unveiled the City Manager's $3.2 billion Proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Budget and the Mayor's recommendations. Long Beach is a full-service City and the Proposed FY 24 Budget maintains all services at the FY 23 level reflecting our commitment to providing quality public services; invests in the wellbeing of the community, small businesses and the local economy; and builds a solid infrastructure to stabilize Long Beach today and into the future. We are asking the public to get involved in the City's budget process by reading the Community Budget Book and by providing your input for our Proposed FY 2024 Budget. Learn of ways to get involved. The City's homelessness emergency response efforts continue. Thank you to all community members who participated in our fifth donation drive thru to collect essential items to distribute to people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. City of Long Beach Unveils Proposed Fiscal Year 2024 Budget The City of Long Beach unveiled its Proposed Fiscal Year 2024 (FY 24) Budget and the Mayor’s recommendations. The $3.2 billion Proposed FY 24 Budget includes the City Manager’s proposed budget and the Proposed FY 24 Capital Improvement Plan. It focuses on key areas identified in the Long Beach Strategic Vision 2030 and takes into consideration priorities from the Long Beach City Council as well as community feedback from residents received during the budget development process earlier this year. Engaging community members through public input is an important and valued part of the City’s budget development process. Earlier this year, the City hosted four in-person meetings and one virtual community meeting and conducted a Budget Priority Survey to offer Long Beach residents an opportunity to provide feedback at an earlier phase of the FY 24 Budget development process. The City will conduct another round of engagement opportunities for the Long Beach community to share their input.  In-person community meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the following: Wednesday, August 9 – Recreation Park Community Center (4900 E. 7th St.) Monday, August 14 – Cabrillo High School, Small Gymnasium (2198 Monitor Ave.) Thursday, August 17 – Mark Twain Library Community Room (1401 E. Anaheim St.) Monday, August 21 – Jordan High School, Community Room #2101 (6500 Atlantic Ave.) Two virtual community meetings will be held on Thursday, August 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Advanced registration for the virtual meetings is required in order to receive the link to the Zoom meeting. Interpretation services in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog will be available for all meetings with additional languages available upon request by calling 562.570.6465 at least 72 hours in advance of each meeting. City of Long Beach Now Accepting Applications for New Lived Experience Advisory Board The City of Long Beach is recruiting residents who are currently or were previously experiencing homelessness to participate in the new Lived Experience Advisory Board, a paid committee that will provide valuable feedback on homeless services in Long Beach. Applications are available now and will remain open until the 11 committee spots are filled. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partnerships with Community Organizations to Serve Residents Experiencing Homelessness The City of Long Beach is seeking partnerships with community organizations and local companies that are interested in collaborating with the City in our homelessness emergency response and assist in serving residents experiencing homelessness. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Watch now With rising summer temperatures, some exceeding high heat index, City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis reminds residents to take precautions against the heat. The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. All open City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations are available as designated cooling centers during their normal business hours. Learn more The City of Long Beach is seeking to partner with a community organization that can establish and facilitate an ongoing Latinx Health Collaborative. This opportunity will provide one-time seed funding to lead and sustain a collaborative space for Latinx-owned and -serving organizations to coordinate health equity efforts and direct services informed by the City’s Mi Vida Cuenta COVID-19 Latinx Health Initiative Report and Workplan (Mi Vida Cuenta). Learn more Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer a Variety of Classes for Residents this Fall Registration for a variety of new and existing recreation classes offered by the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine starts Monday, August 7. More than 700 activities in art, music, nature, fitness, special interest subjects, adult sports leagues and aquatics will begin in September and continue through November 2023. Learn more Movies in the Park Are Still Playing This Summer! Movies in the Park, sponsored by Signal Hill Petroleum and Partners of Parks, are still offering free, family-friendly movies at various parks throughout Long Beach and Signal Hill now through August 25. Movies begin at dusk. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic-style dinners and their family and friends. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partner for Electric Bike Lending Library Program The City of Long Beach announced an Invitation to Bid to provide bikes and equipment for the City’s upcoming Electric Bike (E-Bike) Lending Library program. By enabling Long Beach residents to borrow e-bikes for an extended period of time, the E-Bike Lending Library program will expand familiarity with e-bike technology, increase e-bike ridership within the city and encourage an active, zero-emission mode of travel. Learn more Residents Encouraged to Address Unpaid Utility Bills After nearly three years of suspending utility shutoffs for nonpayment, Long Beach is returning to standard business operations. Residential customers with an unpaid balance on their water, sewer, gas or refuse accounts could face utility disconnection as early as Aug. 15, 2023. To avoid shutoff, customers should pay their balance in full or enroll in a payment plan ahead of the Aug. 15 deadline. Learn more Artesia Great Boulevard Project In preparation for street pavement restoration on Artesia Boulevard, there will be several street closures impacting the area during the month of August 2023. The City’s contractor, Granite Construction will be performing pavement work which will allow only one open lane on either side of the median at the locations listed below. Harbor Avenue to Muriel Avenue Atlantic Avenue to Lime Avenue Union Pacific Railroad Tracks to Downey Avenue Updates City of Long Beach Announces Availability of $12.7 Million in Loans for the Creation of New Affordable Housing Developments The Long Beach Development Services Department is seeking to award $12.7 million in loans to qualified housing development companies for the production of new affordable rental housing in the city. The announcement, known as a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), aims to identify and engage prospective affordable housing partners for the development of new affordable housing units, acquisition, and/or the rehabilitation of existing unrestricted units serving households earning at or below 80% of the Los Angeles County median income. Learn more Long Beach Public Library’s Bay Shore Neighborhood Library to Close for Scheduled Renovation Long Beach Public Library’s Bay Shore Neighborhood Library will temporarily close for a scheduled renovation beginning Monday, August 14. The last day of library service at this location is Saturday, August 12. Due to the extensive renovation work to be conducted, an estimated eight-month closure is anticipated. During this period, all library services, including exterior book returns, will be unavailable at this location. Learn more Long Beach Airport and Arts Council for Long Beach Launch National Call for Artists to Celebrate Airport’s 100th Anniversary Long Beach Airport (LGB) and the Arts Council for Long Beach (ArtsLB) announced a national Call for Artists to commission artwork for an art vinyl mural project measuring three stories on Parking Structure A, across from the Ticketing Lobby. The project is timed to coincide with the Airport’s 100th anniversary this fall. ArtsLB is seeking submissions from skilled artists who are dedicated to supporting the arts community. Artists from all over the country can submit up to three complete artworks to be considered. The festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Houghton Park.
