City of Long Beach News: We Have Queen Mary Updates! 🚢

Stay informed Click here to view in your browser. Welcome to our City Newsletter! Greetings! There's a lot of exciting Long Beach news and events blooming this Spring! Starting off with our one-year return anniversary of the RMS Queen Mary. We have exciting updates about the ship, including its increasingly positive financial forecast, expanded operations and attractions, upcoming preservation and refurbishment projects, and plans for future development. We also want to congratulate our Jordan High School music students that traveled to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall. Thanks to Mayor Rex Richardson and the Mayor’s Fund for Long Beach, with Southwest Airlines who generously provided air travel vouchers for these students to fly through our Long Beach Airport. Our Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine is offering free youth recreation program, Spring Fun Days, at various parks throughout Long Beach during the upcoming school spring break. City of Long Beach Marks One-Year Return of the RMS Queen Mary, Shares Updates and Plans for a Positive Future To commemorate the recent, one-year return of the RMS Queen Mary, the City of Long Beach recently shared a comprehensive update about the ship, including its increasingly positive financial forecast, expanded operations and attractions, upcoming preservation and refurbishment projects, and plans for future development. The ship welcomed visitors back on board in a limited capacity in December 2022, and celebrated a broader grand reopening in June 2023. Since October 2023, over 118,000 guests have come onboard to enjoy the grandeur of this historic vessel. Click here Long Beach Hosts State Conference on Affordable Housing and Homelessness Mayor Rex Richardson and the Long Beach Community Development Department helped welcome housing leaders and more than 2,100 attendees from across the state to Housing California’s 2024 conference on housing and homelessness, taking place this week at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center. The three-day event presented by the Sacramento-based nonprofit organization, Housing California, is the largest homelessness and affordable housing conference in the country. The conference, which features plenary sessions and workshops, in-depth learning labs, and several networking events, brings together housing, homelessness and affordable housing and cross-sector thought leaders, practitioners and advocates. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City of Long Beach Now Accepting Nominations for Veterans Banner Program The City of Long Beach is accepting nominations for the first-ever Long Beach Honors Veterans banner program. The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Veterans Support and the Long Beach Veterans Commission will oversee the administration of up to 25 banners to be displayed across the city for one year beginning in May 2024. Click here Long Beach to Offer Free Youth Recreation Program in Local Parks During School Spring Break April 1-5 The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will offer its free youth recreation program, Spring Fun Days, at various parks throughout Long Beach during the upcoming school spring break. Spring Fun Days engage children ages 5 to 12 in fun activities such as sports, games, arts and crafts, and special events. This is a free drop-in program where registered participants may come and go as they please. The program will run Monday through Friday, April 1-5, from noon to 5 p.m. each day at parks throughout Long Beach. Pre-registration is required. Registration forms may be picked up at participating parks beginning Monday, March 18. Click here Long Beach Airport, Southwest Airlines and City Officials Help Community Uplift Young Musicians Long Beach Airport (LGB) this week welcomed home more than 75 student-musicians from Jordan High School who traveled to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall. The students’ trip was made possible through a community fundraising effort led by the City of Long Beach’s Mayor Rex Richardson and the Mayor’s Fund for Long Beach, with Southwest Airlines generously providing all air travel vouchers. Click here Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Long Beach Airport Bring “Practice Airport Run” to Neurodivergent Children On Saturday, March 2, the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, in collaboration with Long Beach Airport, proudly hosted the inaugural “Take Flight Without Fear” event. This groundbreaking initiative provided neurodivergent children and their families with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in airport culture, fostering confidence, independence and empowerment in children with various abilities. Read more City of Long Beach’s Office of Equity and Citizen’s Advisory Commission on Disability to Host Transportation Day The City of Long Beach’s Office of Equity, in partnership with the Citizen’s Advisory Commission on Disability, is hosting Transportation Day on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.). Transportation Day will connect residents with disabilities to transportation agencies. Additionally, attendees will be able to sign-up for Access Paratransit and Long Beach Transit Dial-A-Lift and hear the latest updates about accessible transportation options in the greater Long Beach area. Click here Updated Digital Inclusion Resource Guides now Available The City of Long Beach partners with various community-based organizations to provide City residents with critical resources that help bridge the digital divide. Resources range from support accessing affordable high-speed Internet to giving community members most in need free or low-cost digital devices like Chromebooks and laptops. We recently collaborated with our community partners to update our digital inclusion resource guides in English, Spanish, Tagalog, and Khmer. Click here Long Beach Hosting ‘Data Walks’ to Increase Transparency and Public Awareness for City’s Data Collection Practices In an ongoing effort to enhance data privacy, digital rights and transparency, the City of Long Beach Department of Technology and Innovation, in partnership with California State University, Long Beach, is launching a series of mobile community workshops, called 'Data Walks,' for residents to learn about the technologies the City deploys and how it uses the data it collects. Groups of 15 to 25 participants will walk and engage with City technology, interact with City staff and CSULB researchers, and review the enhanced platform. Residents can request language interpretation services for the walks in the registration form. Participants will receive a $25 Target gift card in exchange for this 2-hour commitment! Register here! City of Long Beach Launches Sidewalk to Success Program to Support Business Development The City of Long Beach, through the Long Beach Recovery Act, is funding a sidewalk vending support program, “Sidewalk to Success,” to help ease the financial burden for small businesses in the first year of the City’s recently approved Sidewalk Vending Ordinance currently in effect. Read more Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach has expanded the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here City of Long Beach Recognized for Environmentally Conscious and Innovative Fleet Maintenance Practices and Facilities The City of Long Beach has once again been recognized for its industry-leading environmental best practices, as it was recently awarded second place in the 2023 Green Garage Awards by the National Association of Fleet Administrators. The award recognizes the most progressive and environmentally committed and innovative vehicle fleet maintenance garages in the nation and acknowledges environmentally friendly fleets that prioritize sustainability and lower carbon footprints throughout their operations. Click here In 2022, a hit-and-run driver killed 3-year-old Samantha Palacios and her father, Jose Palacios. Last week, Chief Hebeish met with Esnelia Palacios to talk about the LBPD’s ongoing search for the person that killed her daughter and husband. If anyone has any information, we urge them to please help the LBPD bring justice to the Palacios family.
