During the next few months: Food is in high demand. For the first few months of life, pups depend on their pack for food. After birth, adult coyotes hunt to feed themselves and the nursing female coyote. Once pups are weaned from the mother’s milk, typically four weeks after birth, adult coyotes bring food to the den for the growing pups. At three weeks old, pups emerge from their den. As pups grow stronger, they roam further in search of food. In late spring, pups learn to hunt. Coyote vocalizations, such as howling and yipping, may be heard. Coyotes use sounds to communicate with each other and the pups. Vocalizations are mimicked by the young pups as they play and learn boundaries. This is normal coyote behavior. Safety tips during coyote pup season: Do not go near a suspected den. A protective parent or pack member may be nearby. Do not touch abandoned canine pups. What you think may be a puppy in need of rescue may be a coyote pup. The pup may have wandered too far or it may be sick. If you see a canine puppy, please call Torrance Animal Control at (310) 618-3850. Reduce or eliminate food sources. Adult coyotes will look for easily accessible sources of food, especially at this time when more food is required. Print the At-Home Coyote Prevention Checklist and walk through the exterior of your home to minimize coyote attractants. To learn more about coyotes, visit our website: www.TorranceCA.Gov/Coyotes To report coyote sightings, encounters, or other incidents: Call the 24-Hour Coyote Hotline (310) 618-3898 Report using the MyTorranceCA mobile app Submit a web report on the Coyote Management Portal Customer Portal UPDATED COYOTE MANAGEMENT PLAN The Torrance Community Services Department released an updated Coyote Management Plan. BAKER'S DOZEN 2023 Saturday, May 27 - Saturday, June 17 Baker’s Dozen acts as a review of sorts; a survey show of thirteen artists/projects whose work made an impression upon the curators in the last year. These reflect current directions in Southern Californian contemporary art practices. Artists: Suzanne Bybee, Michael Chattem, Pui Tiffany Chow, Rosson Crow, Leslie Foster, Lola del Fresno, James Gilbert, Deborah Lynn Irmas, James Langford, Atilio Pernisco, Cindy Phenix, Alicia Piller, Jack X Proctor, Dani Tull   LAURIE LIPTON DRAWINGS Saturday, May 27 - Saturday, June 17 Lipton was inspired by the religious paintings of the Flemish School. She tried to teach herself how to paint in the style of the 16th century Dutch Masters and failed. When traveling around Europe as a student, she began developing her very own peculiar drawing technique building up tone with thousands of fine cross-hatching lines like an egg tempera painting. According to Laurie, "It's an insane way to draw, but the resulting detail and luminosity is worth the amount of effort. My drawings take longer to create than a painting of equal size. You can’t really experience the impact of the detail & intensity of one of my larger pieces on a computer screen. They have to be seen in the flesh.”   TORRANCE PUBLIC LIBRARY Torrance libraries are a great place to find a variety of programs for all ages.
