Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   Recent increases in fatal cat attacks have been reported in the City of Torrance. It is unclear if affected cats are domestic pets or feral, given that most cats found are missing identification tags or microchips. While cat licenses are optional, it is encouraged for identification and safety. For information about the City of Torrance pet licensing process, please visit our website. What do coyotes eat? Coyotes in the wild hunt and forage. They eat lizards, rodents, fish, birds, small mammalian prey, as well as native fruits and seeds. The diet of urban coyotes, on the other hand, is mostly supplied by humans. A multi-year study of coyote scat (feces) in Los Angeles County found that human-provided food sources account for nearly 60-75% of urban coyote diets. Feeding wildlife changes the dynamic between people and animals. It creates a positive association and a level of comfort around people, which can lead to conflict. In addition to food in the wild, urban coyotes feast on a buffet of food found in cities. Human-provided food sources include:  ornamental seed or fruit planted in gardens; garbage; unsecured leftover food; and cats. Feral and domestic cats that wander outdoors account for 20% of the coyote diet. Occasionally small dogs can be mistaken as prey. Attacks on cats and small mammals are normal coyote behavior. Larger mammals, like people and dogs, are not typically seen as prey. How do I protect my pet? Understand your pet’s risks. When pets are allowed to roam freely outdoors, even for a short time, your pet is exposed to perils, such as cars, dogs, disease, poisons, coyotes, and other wildlife. Decide. Is allowing your pet to roam unsupervised worth the risk? Providing access to the outdoors can leave your pet vulnerable, and this includes your back or front yard, a doggy door, or allowing your pet to run off-leash. Take action. Go outdoors with your pet. Walk pets on a short leash. Avoid areas with heavy brush where coyotes, snakes, and other wildlife can hide. Make your home a pet sanctuary. Print the At-Home Coyote Prevention Checklist to eliminate coyote attractants outside your home. Consider a catio or dog kennel if your home is near a coyote habitat. Coyotes are opportunistic eaters, which enables them to thrive in cities. TORRANCE NEIGHBORHOOD OUTDOOR WARNING SIREN TESTING Thursday, September 14 | 10 A.M. TorranceNOW Sirens are part of the overall Torrance Community Warning System, which includes Torrance Alerts, Torrance Refining Company Siren, Crenshaw/Del Amo Barrier System, CitiSOUNDS radio, CitiCABLE, Emergency Alert System, and the recently tested Beach Emergency Evacuation Lights System (BEELS). TorranceNOW includes eight sirens strategically located in the City at all six fire stations, Southeast Library, and one at the corner of Lomita Boulevard and Madison Street. TorranceNOW Sirens is designed for early warning to the community in the event there is a significant emergency requiring a call-to-action.
