City of Long Beach News: Labor Day Holiday Schedule and Events in September!

Stay informed Click here to view in your browser. Welcome to our City Newsletter! Greetings! It's Labor Day weekend and we want to remind everyone to please celebrate safely. Due to the holiday some City of Long Beach facilities will be closed and some services may be impacted. Below we have our full holiday schedule. For many of us it might feel like the summer is over now that the kids are back in school, but the summer is not officially over! We have tons of outdoor events for the entire family happening all of September. Don't miss out! The City's homelessness emergency response efforts continue. We were recently awarded $5.3 million in Encampment Resolution Funding from the State of California, which will provide much needed additional attention in parts of Downtown Long Beach. In this newsletter issue you will also find the moving story about Polin Hem. He lived in the streets of Long Beach near MacArthur Park. He was able to overcome homelessness through the support of our Homeless Services Outreach team. Read his full story below. City of Long Beach Facilities and Services Schedule for Labor Day In observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 4, 2023, many City facilities will be closed and some services may be impacted. Learn more City of Long Beach Awarded $5.3 Million from State of California in Encampment Resolution Funding to Address Key Areas of Need in Downtown The City of Long Beach has been awarded $5.3 million in Encampment Resolution Funding from the State of California. The funding will provide much needed additional attention and focus in parts of Downtown Long Beach with a high level of need. City Outreach staff, through focused and respectful outreach, will provide services to people experiencing homelessness in the area with the addition of immediate interim and emergency shelter options and the goal of transitioning to safe and stable permanent housing. Learn more Voices Of Homelessness: Searching For Polin Hem Meet Polin Hem, he experienced homelessness and lived in the streets of Long Beach near MacArthur Park. He served in the military when his life took a sudden turn. Left with no where to go he was alone in the streets with his small dog Melfina. After multiple attempts from our Homeless Services Outreach team he finally agreed to get help. Fast forward to today, he has his own apartment. Read more City of Long Beach Seeks to Mass Distribute Water to People Experiencing Homelessness, Donating Water to Local Community Based Organizations to Further Efforts In an ongoing effort to increase access to clean water and other essentials for people experiencing homelessness, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services’ Homeless Services Bureau is offering cases of water to local community-based organizations and advocates supporting people experiencing homelessness. Community organizations interested in receiving cases of water are encouraged to submit a water donation request form. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partnerships with Community Organizations to Serve Residents Experiencing Homelessness The City of Long Beach is seeking partnerships with community organizations and local companies that are interested in collaborating with the City in our homelessness emergency response and assist in serving residents experiencing homelessness. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more City Continues to Accept Applications for Visual Improvement Program Grant The application for the Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant is still available! This will support local businesses impacted by crime and vandalism on or after October 1, 2022. Eligible businesses can receive $1,500 to cover storefront repairs, boarding costs, insurance deductibles and business operating expenses. Watch now Community Invited to Help Shape the Future of Downtown Long Beach and Nearby Shoreline The Long Beach Development Services Department is inviting residents and local stakeholders to get involved and provide input on a planning effort to update land use plans for the Downtown and adjacent waterfront areas. The initiative will update regulations for development in Downtown and establish a common vision for the future of the Downtown Shoreline area. The Department will host an in-person open house event to solicit public input on the plans, on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Billie Jean King Main Library. Those interested in attending are requested to RSVP online. Learn more Community Invited to Attend Homebuyer Information and Resource Workshops The Long Beach Development Services Department will host another workshop just added! These workshops provide residents with valuable homeownership information and resources. The free evening workshops will present details about the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program (Program) as well as information about various federal and county housing programs available to residents. Full eligibility requirements and guidelines, including materials and applications in Spanish, Tagalog and Khmer, are available on the Program website. Learn more The City of Long Beach is launching a second round of Request for Proposals to partner with community organizations to implement programs that address the systemic barriers and racism that created the inequitable differences seen locally throughout the pandemic and address the impacts of COVID-19 in the most at-risk, historically underserved and under-resourced communities in Long Beach. Learn more The City of Long Beach is seeking to partner with a community organization that can establish and facilitate an ongoing Latinx Health Collaborative. This opportunity will provide one-time seed funding to lead and sustain a collaborative space for Latinx-owned and -serving organizations to coordinate health equity efforts and direct services informed by the City’s Mi Vida Cuenta COVID-19 Latinx Health Initiative Report and Workplan (Mi Vida Cuenta). Learn more ‘READY Long Beach’ Set to Return September 9 Save the date! On Saturday, Sept. 9, our Long Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), in partnership with other City of Long Beach departments, regional disaster response agencies and community partners, will host the 7th Annual READY Long Beach Community Preparedness Expo. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid on the California State University, Long Beach. Community members are invited to attend the event and learn about how to prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies. Learn more Are You Prepared for a Disaster? City of Long Beach Recognizes National Preparedness Month This September The City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications will recognize National Preparedness Month throughout the month of September to promote personal, household and community preparedness. In alignment with FEMA’s 2023 theme, “Helping Older Adults Prepare for Disaster,” this year, the City will focus on preparing older adults and people with disabilities, especially those who are living alone, low income or isolated from supportive services. Learn more Long Beach Volunteers Needed for 39th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, September 23 The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is inviting the community to get involved and make a positive impact on the local environment by participating in the 39th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day taking place Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023. Learn more Long Beach Offering Community Learning Hubs and Mobile Recess Programs to Provide Safe and Engaging Recreation for Youth After School The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will once again offer its Community Learning Hubs and Mobile Recess Programs this fall. More than 700 activities in art, music, nature, fitness, special interest subjects, adult sports leagues and aquatics will begin in September and continue through November 2023. Learn more City of Long Beach Celebrates Groundbreaking for Davenport Park Expansion The City of Long Beach recently celebrated the launch of the Davenport Park Phase II expansion project. This Expansion project will expand the existing 5.5-acre park to 11.5 acres. The expanded new portion of the park will include a multi-use sports field, fitness stations, outdoor seating areas, site furnishings, a walking trail, and additional parking. Other amenities include shaded picnic areas and drought-tolerant landscaping with updated lighting, and bike racks. There will be a connecting path to the existing Davenport Park. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Community Feedback for Future Improvements at Long Beach Pride Tower The City of Long Beach is inviting the community to provide initial feedback on future improvements to the Long Beach Pride Lifeguard Tower through an online community survey now available through Friday, Sept. 15, 2023. The community is also invited to attend an in-person community meeting on Sept. 27, 2023, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Bixby Park Community Center to learn more about the project and share their feedback. Learn more City of Long Beach Seeks Partner for Electric Bike Lending Library Program The City of Long Beach announced an Invitation to Bid to provide bikes and equipment for the City’s upcoming Electric Bike (E-Bike) Lending Library program. By enabling Long Beach residents to borrow e-bikes for an extended period of time, the E-Bike Lending Library program will expand familiarity with e-bike technology, increase e-bike ridership within the city and encourage an active, zero-emission mode of travel. Learn more Community is Invited to Attend Grand Unveiling of the Newly Renovated Resource Area Saturday, September 16 The Long Beach Public Library is pleased to announce the grand unveiling of the newly renovated African American Resource Area at Burnett Neighborhood Library on Saturday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. Members of the community are invited to celebrate this significant milestone at this free event to learn more about this unique collection, which has been an integral part of the Burnett Neighborhood Library for 25 years. Learn more Long Beach Public Library Adds Monday Service Hours at Three Neighborhood Libraries, Additional Locations to Follow Beginning Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) will offer an additional day of service on Mondays at three neighborhood library locations – Alamitos (1836 E. Third St.), Harte (1595 W. Willow St.) and Michelle Obama (5870 Atlantic Ave.) – with two additional locations anticipated to begin in late September. This expansion of service is the result of structural and one-time enhancements to Library Services in the amount of $1.25 million as part of the City’s Adopted Fiscal Year 2023 Budget approved by the City Council and represents the most significant expansion of LBPL services since 2007. Learn more Long Beach Airport Unveils, Preserves Full Mosaic Masterwork in Historic Terminal Renovations underway on the Historic Terminal at Long Beach Airport (LGB) appear part construction site, part archaeologic dig as workers carefully unearth long unseen portions of a 1941 mosaic masterwork by artist Grace Clements. Part of the ongoing $17.8 million renovation of the Historic Terminal, which is expected to be complete in early 2024, includes expert-led restoration efforts to locate and protect the entire mosaic—made up of nine vignettes comprised of an estimated 1.6 million hand-cut tiles in about two dozen different colors.
