Prefer to use your mobile device? Download the myTorranceCA app, available on iTunes and Google Play Store. Always, if there is an immediate threat, call 911.   The flexible diet and adaptive behavior of coyotes enable them to thrive in cities throughout America. Coyotes learned city life offers a variety of easily accessible foods they otherwise wouldn't eat in the wild. Wildlife conflict occurs when an animal positively associates humans with food and loses its fear of people. Experts in the field often link aggressive coyotes with a dependence on humans for food. How can residents prevent problematic coyote behavior? Hazing is one tool to keep coyotes away. It is a training opportunity, especially for adolescent coyotes learning to hunt. Young coyotes have a natural fear of people. Adult coyotes, on the other hand, have more experience with people who passively observe or even avoid it. This submissive inaction teaches coyotes to be bold or nonchalant in the presence of people. Understanding how to properly haze coyotes is essential. Please heed the following do not haze scenarios. Unsafe and improper hazing: Do not discharge a firearm or air rifle. This includes a pellet gun, BB gun, air rifle, spring gun, or other weapon which discharges a shot or missile. It is illegal (TMC 45.3.7) and unsafe for people in the area. Never shoot an animal to haze it. Do not approach or haze a sick or injured coyote. It will react in fight mode. Call Torrance Animal Control at (310) 618-3850. If the sick or injured coyote is in a high-traffic area call 9-1-1. Do not corner a coyote. Always give a coyote an escape route. How to correct or re-train coyotes to fear and avoid people? If one technique doesn’t work, try another. Be persistent until the coyote turns around. Instead of observing coyotes, instill fear using: deterrents: spray water, unfurl a trash bag, or open and close an umbrella in the direction of the coyote; visual cues: make yourself appear larger, flashlights at the coyote; or loud noises: yell in a deep voice, growl. Hazing should be carried out consistently and by the community at large. It helps reinforce a healthy fear, keeping coyotes at a safe distance from people.
