Keeping up with Kathryn

Dec. 6, 2024

Dear Friends,

As I pick up the gavel and assume my role as Chair (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-to-serve-as-chair-of-the-la-county-board-of-supervisors-for-2024-25/) of the Board of Supervisors for this next year, I look ahead with determination and hope for what we will accomplish. I'll be uplifting two core values: safety and unity. My leadership will focus on galvanizing efforts to ensure our communities have access to the support they need to feel secure.

Safety means helping people on our streets access supportive services and interim housing. Safety means ensuring our foster youth have the tools they need to age out of our system successfully into adulthood. Safety means investing in our health and mental health systems to provide compassionate care to those who depend on us. Safety also means supporting our public safety agencies to make sure our neighborhoods and businesses are protected.

Last time I took the gavel, a global pandemic became the focus of our lives. When I assumed my role as Chair five years ago, I didn’t know what was ahead. The most valuable lesson I learned from that experience was that the only way our communities would get through it was together. Last time I was at the helm, I steadied the ship. It was an undeniably turbulent time, and I stand ready to do it again.

Now, five years later, with more experience under our belts, we know that we can take on even the hardest challenges. None of us know exactly what this next year will hold. But, here’s what I will say with certainty: The County of Los Angeles remains a strong and stable safety net for our communities.

Together, I truly believe we can make Los Angeles County safer, stronger, and more unified in 2025.

Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger
Chair of the Board
Supervisor, Fifth District

It was great to start the holiday season with festivities across the County. This week, I joined The Music Center, the La Crescenta Library, and the City of Monrovia for holiday fun that got the entire community involved. As beautiful as the lights are on the trees and streets, the most important thing is who’s gathered around them.

Congratulations to our new Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman! His election is good news for victims, victims’ families, neighborhoods, and business owners alike. He's committed to collaboration, accountability, and safety and will bring a balanced approach as our County’s chief prosecutor. Together, we'll strengthen our communities and make Los Angeles County a safer and more just place for all.

Metro is testing out new technology. These taller gates are designed to reduce fare evasion and enhance access control to our rail system. I'm hopeful this will be another step that improves safety and customer experience.

Today, I met with Vic Nol and Priscilla Cheng of LA28 who are leading efforts to connect with local governments to prepare for the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Los Angeles. There is a lot of work underway to make it a positive experience for athletes and fans worldwide, as well as our local communities. The scale of preparation is vast and I'm committed to ensuring the County stays engaged.
