In observance of the holiday this Monday, May 27, City Hall will be closed and some services may be impacted. Below we have our full holiday schedule. Join us for Honoring Our Heroes: A Sunset Ceremony, a free, family-friendly event to commemorate Memorial Day on Sunday, May 26, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Navy Memorial in Shoreline Aquatic Park where we will honor our fallen military service members and celebrate the rich history of the Navy in Long Beach. We also have exciting news to share about the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28). The Long Beach City Council recently approved the Games Agreement making Long Beach an official Venue City, which will support the delivery of events during the LA28 games and host several sporting events in areas throughout the city. ๏ปฟScroll down to get more information on resources, job openings, events and more. Click here Long Beach City Council Approves Games Agreement for 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games ICYMI: The Long Beach City Council recently approved Games Agreement with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28). As a Venue City, Long Beach will support the delivery of events during the LA28 Games and will host several sporting events in areas throughout the city. Long Beach is the second Venue City to finalize its Games Agreement with LA28. The LA28 Games are scheduled to take place July 14, 2028, through Aug. 27, 2028. Click here Long Beach Health Department Launches New Dashboard Featuring Community Crisis Response Data Our Health Department launched a new data dashboard for the Community Crisis Response (CCR) team, a five-person team that responds to a subset of calls-for-service to provide mental health support, health education and resource navigation for community members in need. The dashboard, which will be updated bi-weekly, hosts information about the amount, types and outcomes of the calls for service the CCR is dispatched to and will serve as a platform for providing interactive and timely information to the public. Click here City of Long Beach Announces Homelessness Strategic Plan Update Initiative We recently released our Homelessness Strategic Plan Update Initiative, a major milestone in the Cityโ€™s ongoing efforts to address homelessness and housing insecurity in Long Beach. Long Beach residents, businesses and stakeholders are invited to participate in a short, five-minute online survey, available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog, to help guide the Cityโ€™s Homelessness Strategic Plan Update. The public survey is available now until June 17, 2024. Those who complete the survey will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win a $50 gift card, provided by City Fabrick. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. We are hosting a virtual community meeting to provide recent updates on the Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project. The meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. Click here City of Long Beach Named Number One Leading Fleet in U.S. and Canada by Government Fleet Magazine The City of Long Beach Fleet Services was named the number one fleet in the U.S. and Canada among leading fleets, according to the Government Fleet magazine. Long Beach was chosen for its exemplary leadership among staff, customers and the community; its efficient and competitive operations; overcoming challenges; and for its vision and direction. Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer a Variety of Recreation Classes This Summer Registration for new and existing recreation classes offered by our Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine remains open. Summer is quickly approaching and PRM is offering over 700 activities taking place throughout the city and catering to all ages. From preschool to adults ages 50+, residents can enjoy classes in art, music, nature, fitness, special interest subjects, adult sports leagues, aquatics and more all summer long. Click here Rancho Los Cerritos is Excited to Offer Educational and Immersive Summer Day Camps Rancho Los Cerritos (RLC) will offer immersive day camps for elementary and middle -school-aged students this summer! The goal for each camp session is to create an engaging, safe, and fun environment for local children to learn about the history of RLC and Long Beach. Four week-long sessions will be offered, each with a different theme. Click here Helena Donato-Sapp Selected as Long Beachโ€™s Second Youth Poet Laureate Helena Donato-Sapp from Vista Mar High School has been selected as the premiere Youth Poet Laureate for the sophomore year of the Long Beach Public Libraryโ€™s Youth Poet Laureate (YPL) program. The announcement took place during a live ceremony held on May 9 at the historic Edison Theater, where six Poet Ambassadors were also selected. The YPL program aims to empower Long Beach youth to drive positive change in their communities through activism and art. Click here Our Health Department has awarded $811,000 in grants to 14 organizations to implement Health Equity Community Projects. The projects focus on addressing systemic barriers that have led to poor health outcomes in historically underserved communities during the pandemic. Click here City of Long Beach Launches Sidewalk to Success Program to Support Business Development The City of Long Beach, through the Long Beach Recovery Act, is funding a sidewalk vending support program, โ€œSidewalk to Success,โ€ to help ease the financial burden for small businesses in the first year of the Cityโ€™s recently approved Sidewalk Vending Ordinance currently in effect. Read more Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach has expanded the Cityโ€™s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here City of Long Beach Announces Strategic Improvement Plan for the New LGBTQ+ Cultural District The City of Long Beach has prepared a Strategic Improvement Plan (Plan) for the new LGBTQ+ Cultural District. Presented at the May 21, 2024, City Council meeting, which was approved with a 9 to 0 vote, the Plan will serve as a roadmap for future improvements along the Broadway corridor, benefitting both residents and businesses and honoring the cultural and historical significance of the LGBTQ+ community in Long Beach.
