World Polio Day

It’s time to “End Polio Now”
October 23, 2024

World Polio Day (October 24)
Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, polio cases have decreased by more than 99%. Vaccines have stopped the spread of wild poliovirus in all but two countries. However, outbreaks of variant poliovirus continue to occur worldwide. On World Polio Day, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone has access to lifesaving vaccines to end polio for good.

New Countries Reporting Polio Outbreaks

In a new report, CDC and WHO laboratories detected variant poliovirus outbreaks in nearly 40 countries between January 2023 and June 2024. Variant poliovirus can lead to polio outbreaks in communities with a high number of unvaccinated children.

We must increase vaccination for all in order to interrupt polio transmission.

Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) Program Fights Diseases with Vaccines

Since it began 25 years ago, the STOP Program has recruited, trained, and deployed nearly 2,500 international public health professionals to more than 80 countries. STOP consultants strengthen surveillance systems, support immunization activities, and respond to outbreaks. The program focuses on a wide range of vaccine-preventable diseases.

In 2024, STOP has 140 consultants in 25 countries in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean region. Partners include WHO, UNICEF, and the African Field Epidemiology Network.

Protecting Children from Polio

Polio mainly affects children under age 5. Although there is no cure for polio, it is preventable with a vaccine. Explore how CDC and partners are actively working to end polio globally.
