Everyone is busy with graduation ceremonies and end of the school year events. This week Long Beach Unified School District will also end their school year sending off our youth to summer vacation. Don't stress out about what summer activities to enroll your toddler, small child, tween, teen or even yourself in. The City of Long Beach has compiled a list of more than 1,000 events and activities happening in Long Beach starting this month. In addition, our Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine department is offering affordable programming for the entire family. We recently announced the Summer of Opportunity initiative, a collective impact approach focused on fostering positive development among Long Beach youth while also addressing youth violence. It’s a Summer of Endless Fun with Long Beach’s New Online Summer Activities Calendar We are offering a variety of summer family-friendly programs, activities and events for residents of all ages to enjoy. Click here Long Beach Leaders Announce Plans for a Safe and Healthy Summer This week, the City of Long Beach announced details for its Summer of Opportunity initiative, a collective impact approach focused on fostering positive development among Long Beach youth while simultaneously addressing youth violence. The initiative features three key areas of focus – S.T.R.O.N.G. Beach (Standing Together to Reach Our Next Generation), which will expand summer youth opportunities; violence prevention and suppression strategies; and community engagement and activation – to further support and uplift local youth. Click here City of Long Beach to Consider Approval of Potential Venue Areas for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the Long Beach City Council will consider approving a Venue Use Guarantee with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28). The Venue Use Guarantee is a critical step in solidifying the venues in Long Beach for the LA28 Games, scheduled from July 14, 2028, through Aug. 27, 2028. Potential Long Beach venues include the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center area, Marina Green and Alamitos Beach, and waterfront around the Belmont Shore Beach area, as well as Marine Stadium. Click here Long Beach’s Water Playgrounds to Open at Alamitos and Bay Shore Beaches June 14 The City of Long Beach will open the popular inflatable “Wibit” aquatic playgrounds at Alamitos Beach and Bay Shore Avenue on Friday, June 14, 2024, offering residents and visitors of these Long Beach beaches free, family-friendly fun and active water play all summer long through Monday, Sept. 2. Click here Long Beach Transit’s next service change will take place on Sunday, June 16, 2024, and exciting improvements are coming! Bus schedule updates include changes to Routes 1, 2, 102, 104, and 151. They will also launch a new and improved online Trip Planner. Whether you're commuting to work, exploring the city, or just running errands, our new Trip Planner will offer real-time schedules, route options, and the quickest routes to your destination. Click here City of Long Beach Announces Homelessness Strategic Plan Update Initiative We recently released our Homelessness Strategic Plan Update Initiative, a major milestone in the City’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness and housing insecurity in Long Beach. Long Beach residents, businesses and stakeholders are invited to participate in a short, five-minute online survey, available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog, to help guide the City’s Homelessness Strategic Plan Update. The public survey is available now until June 17, 2024. Those who complete the survey will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win a $50 gift card, provided by City Fabrick. Click here Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. We are hosting a virtual community meeting to provide recent updates on the Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project. The meeting will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. Click here Long Beach’s Mark Twain Neighborhood Library Closed June 11 for Routine Maintenance Long Beach Public Library’s Mark Twain Neighborhood Library will be closed on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, for scheduled routine maintenance. The original doors to the location will be replaced. The library is expected to reopen the following day, Wednesday, June 12.  All other branches of the Long Beach Public Library, excluding Bay Shore, will remain open and available for use. Library patrons are encouraged to utilize the Library’s vast collection of digital resources, including the Library catalog, downloads, and databases, available 24/7. Click here Long Beach Public Library Recognizes LGBTQIA+ Pride Month with Proud Voices Celebration Long Beach Public Library is celebrating LGBTQIA+ Pride Month this month with an array of special programs, curated book and film lists and engaging activities for visitors of all ages. Recognizing June as a month of national significance for commemorating the history and accomplishments of the LGBTQIA+ community, this year's theme, Proud Voices, underscores the importance of visibility through various mediums including history, storytelling, art and film. Click here Long Beach Public Library Launches 2024 Summer Reading Program Adventure awaits as the Long Beach Public Library gears up to kick off its annual Summer Reading Program, inviting readers of all ages to embark on literary adventures under the theme, Adventure Begins At Your Library. Spanning nine weeks from June 8 to August 10, the program offers a plethora of enriching summer activities, events and incentives across all 12 Library locations. The SEED Summer Design Camp offers a unique opportunity for 7th- and 8th-grade students to immerse themselves in art, design and culture while engaging with key urban themes. Click here Long Beach Launches Improved Digital Rights Platform to Enhance Data Privacy and Digital Rights for Residents The City of Long Beach recently launched a new data privacy and digital rights platform as part of its ongoing effort to enhance data privacy, digital rights and transparency. The City’s Department of Technology and Innovation partnered with California State University, Long Beach to launch the enhanced platform earlier this year, which then underwent pilot testing with community members who participated in community data walks that were held in March. The enhanced digital rights platform, available at longbeach.gov/digitalrights, and accompanying educational signage available at locations throughout the city help further the City's efforts to educate its residents about their digital rights. Click here Community Invited to Participate in Multi-Day Community Charrette to Support Reimagining for Long Beach’s Shoreline Area The City of Long Beach invites residents as well as business and community representatives to participate in a series of visioning exercises to create a plan for the Downtown Shoreline area of Long Beach. Community members are invited to participate in the many activities taking place in the area June 13-20, 2024, and complete an online survey available now through June 24. Click here Long Beach Businesses, Nonprofits and Residents Affected by Winter Storm Series Can Now Apply for Disaster Loans Available through the U.S. Small Business Administration The City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications is encouraging local homeowners and renters, businesses of all sizes, and private nonprofit organizations affected by the severe winter storms that occurred between Jan. 31-Feb. 9, 2024, to take advantage of low-interest federal disaster loans being offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
