●Marriage is a legal act of enrollment, which creates a marriage causation.　During the period of the marriage cause, the rights and obligations of marriage arise.　It is a matter of course.　In the same way, becoming a U.S. citizen occurs when you legally acquire nationality.　Once you acquire U.S. citizenship, you have rights and obligations as an American citizen.　It is a matter of course.

●If you meet someone you like and want to marry him or her, you must first get divorced.　Divorce is a legal process to dissolve a previous marriage.　This means that ① a dual national is an American and has rights and obligations as an American ② and cannot leave American citizenship unless he or she renounces his or her American citizenship.

● A dual national is a person with these problems.

●Some Americans are renouncing their American citizenship because they do not want these complications and because their new country of choice does not recognize dual citizenship. In 2022, 2 ， 390 and in 2023, 5 315 will renounce their US citizenship.

●So what specific complications ・ do dual citizens face?

While in the U.S.
1. required to report foreign assets on tax return every year （ e.g. ： inheritance in Japan, income in Japan ）
2. apply for renunciation of nationality and only after it is approved, cease to be an American
3. If the IRS does not approve your renunciation of U.S. citizenship, you will always be liable for U.S. taxes
4. renunciation of citizenship for tax evasion is not allowed
5. inheritance from a spouse's death is tax-free up to ＄ 13 ． 9 million.　However, when renouncing citizenship, it will be subject to departure tax.

Report to the IRS the termination of tax liability upon renunciation of citizenship
● Tax returns for the past 5 years are reviewed by the IRS
● Departure tax is imposed if any of the following apply
① As of date of renunciation of citizenship ＄ 2
（ This amount includes overseas assets ）
② Average annual income for the past 5 years exceeds ＄ 190,000
③ If you have had tax liability violations in the past 5 years （ Tax evasion ・ Non-reporting of financial assets in Japan, etc. ）

After returning to Japan
1 ． As an American, visa-free travel is 3 months, and residence permit is required for longer stay.　If you want to stay in Japan permanently, you need to apply for permanent residence or naturalization as a Japanese citizen.　Foreigners will not be eligible for Japanese public assistance ・ benefits until these adjustments are made.

2 ． If you break the rules and start a business or work and move money around, you are in the eyes of the Japanese and American financial community and your account may be seized if they find out about it.

3 ． The U.S. can force your extradition to the U.S. for crimes committed while you were an American

4 ． Child support and other payments are tracked even if you renounce your American citizenship

5 ． Social Security Benefit can be received even after renouncing US citizenship
