CDC Recognizes World AIDS Day 2024
With support from the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CDC leads efforts around the world, helping countries find and implement the right mix of HIV prevention methods that will have the greatest impact on curbing new infections.







































                           
 
New Data: Accelerating PrEP

A recent article shows that, through PEPFAR, CDC supported over 2.2 million people in starting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) across 37 countries from 2017 to 2023. 

Oral PrEP is a highly effective medication that is taken before exposure to prevent HIV infection. When taken consistently, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by 99 percent.

New Data: Mozambique's Collective Action

Collective action in Mozambique to end the HIV epidemic is adding up to major impact. As part of PEPFAR, CDC’s efforts have helped prevent an estimated 1.6 million new HIV infections and over 1 million HIV-related deaths through the expansion of HIV treatment.

HIV Prevention Rollout in Ukraine 

CDC Ukraine’s dedication to reaching the most vulnerable with lifesaving HIV services led to the country’s rollout of a new injectable HIV prevention tool, long-acting cabotegravir (CAB-LA). This was the first time this innovation was available for use in PEPFAR programs outside of Africa.
