Where Does Your Water Come From?

While the recent storms presented some challenges for our region, it is thanks to the record-setting precipitation that our spreading grounds and dams are filled with water, relieving us from the severe drought the County has been in.

Los Angeles County has recently upgraded its spreading grounds to increase the amount of rainwater and runoff captured in massive earthen bowls, which then are used to recharge groundwater. This is important because 30-40% of the water used in the County is pumped from groundwater supplies.

"Spreading grounds help us capture more stormwater from rain in the region. They are built in strategic locations around the County where the soil below is permeable and connected to the aquifer. Instead of allowing rainwater to turn into runoff, it is captured in the spreading grounds where it can slowly infiltrate into groundwater basins."

In January, VP Harris visited the Tujunga Spreading Grounds, along with Public Works Director Mark Pestrella and LA County 3rd District Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, highlighting the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the federal funds towards projects across the State and County that aim to improve drought resiliency across California and neighboring states. VP Harris highlighted the work happening in this facility and emphasized the need for investing in smart ways to store and collect water so that we will have that water in times of crisis.

Los Angeles County will continue to focus on increasing groundwater recharge, stormwater capture and reservoir storage to secure our water supply for us and future generations.

In order to keep our momentum going, LA County asks residents to continue their water-efficient habits so that we can continue building a drought-resilient County.
