*Particle Pollution Advisory - Fireworks*

According to the *South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD)**,* [ https://xappp.aqmd.gov/advisories/Home/Details/5be3351e-70a5-4454-b13e-b058b9031d9e?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term= ] Independence Day fireworks are expected to cause poor air quality throughout most of Los Angeles County, including Downtown, San Fernando Valley, and San Gabriel Valley from Saturday night through most of the day on Sunday. Air Quality Index (AQI) may reach* “*Unhealthy” levels or higher during this period.

*The advisory will be in effect starting on Saturday, July 4 at 5 p.m. until Sunday, July 5 at 3 p.m. Everyone should monitor local Air Quality Index (AQI) updates during this period.*

On July 4, light winds and increased smoke from fireworks are expected in the South Coast Air Basin in the evening, increasing pollutant build-up. It will continue to remain high through the early afternoon on July 5. Fireworks release large amounts of particle pollution (PM2.5 and PM10) and air toxic metals.

Breathing particle pollution can lead to cardiovascular and respiratory health effects such as heart attacks, asthma aggravation, decreased lung function, coughing, or difficulty breathing and may lead to premature death in people with heart or lung disease. Individuals experiencing severe or worsening symptoms, including difficulty breathing, chest pain, or significant respiratory distress, should seek medical attention immediately.

The following recommendations will help you protect yourself and your family from harmful effects of bad air quality:


* Avoid vigorous physical activity and remain indoors with doors and windows closed.

* Run your air conditioner and/or air purifier if available.

* Avoid using a whole house fan or swamp cooler as they can bring polluted air indoors.

* If you see or smell smoke, or notice particles in the air, stay indoors to limit exposure, especially if you have heart or lung conditions, are elderly, or have children.

* If it’s too hot to keep windows and doors closed, go to a public place like a library or shopping center to stay cool and protect yourself from harmful air.

* If you experience symptoms like severe coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, palpitations, nausea, or unusual fatigue, contact your doctor or go to urgent care. For life-threatening symptoms, call 911.
